Ponies Take Series Finale on Sunday

The SeaWolves dropped the series finale to the Binghamton Rumble Ponies, 6-3, on Sunday afternoon at Mirabito Stadium.

The Rumble Ponies jumped ahead in the second against Erie starter A.J. Ladwig. Ronny Mauricio led off with a double and scored on a Jake Mangum base hit. Hayden Senger and Jeremy Vasquez followed with back-to-back singles, loading the bases. Antonie Duplantis hit into a fielder's choice, scoring Mangum for a 2-0 lead.

Binghamton extended the lead in the third. Francisco Alvarez led off with a walk and Mauricio homered with one out for a four-run lead.

The SeaWolves cut into the Binghamton lead in the fifth. Gage Workman led off and walked against Ponies reliever Brian Metoyer. Quincy Nieporte crushed a two-run home run with one out, making it a 4-2 game. The home run for Nieporte was his team-leading fifth.

Erie made it a one-run game in the top of the eighth against reliever Joe Zanghi. Nieporte led off with a single and got into scoring position on an error. He scored on a two-out Dillon Dingler base hit to make it 4-3.

Binghamton added a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth against reliever Yaya Chentouf. Chentouf retired the first two hitters of the inning before issuing back-to-back walks to Mangum and Senger. Vasquez doubled home both runners for a 6-3 lead.

Bryce Montes de Oca worked a 1-2-3 ninth inning and earned his second save of the season.

Ponies reliever Trey Cobb (1-1) earned the win in relief tossing 2.1 scoreless with a pair of strikeouts.

Ladwig (0-1) took the loss allowing four runs on five hits with a walk and three strikeouts in three innings.
