Ponies Drop Series Opener to Portland

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. - The Binghamton Rumble Ponies (19-20, 54-54) fell to the Portland Sea Dogs, 9-6, in the series opener at Mirabito Stadium on Tuesday night. The Sea Dogs jumped in front of the Ponies in the Northeast Division standings.

Portland (20-20, 60-49) put up a four-spot against Blade Tidwell (1-2) in the third inning, with four-straight extra base hits. Alex Binelas hit a leadoff double, Corey Rosier followed with an RBI double, Brainer Bonaci hit an RBI double, and Tyler Dearden clobbered a two-run homer to make it 4-0.

The Sea Dogs added two more runs in the fourth on RBI walks from Dearden and Nick Yorke that made it 6-0.

Binghamton chipped away and cut the deficit in half in the fifth inning. Mateo Gil hit a leadoff double, Luisangel Acuña followed with a single, and Jeremiah Jackson later worked a two-out walk to load up the bases. Rowdey Jordan smoked a bases-clearing three-run triple with two outs that made it 6-3.

Portland quickly grabbed those three runs back in the top of the sixth, highlighted by an RBI single from Dearden and two-run homer from Yorke that made it 9-3.

Binghamton chipped away the rest of the way, but could not catch Portland. Hayden Senger hit an RBI double in the sixth that made it 9-4. Agustin Ruiz drove in JT Schwartz on a sacrifice fly to make it 9-5 in the seventh. Drew Gilbert hit a solo homer in the eighth inning that made it 9-6.

The Rumble Ponies continue their series with the Sea Dogs at Mirabito Stadium on Wednesday night. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. and pregame coverage will begin at 6:20 p.m. on the WNBF Rumble Ponies Radio Network.

Postgame Notes: Gilbert crushed his first home run as a member of the Mets' organization...Nolan Clenney struck out six batters over 2.1 innings, including the first five batters he faced...Senger extended his hitting streak to five games and tallied his eighth multi-hit game...The Ponies drew seven walks and struck out 14 Sea Dogs hitters.
