PORTLAND, ME - The Binghamton Rumble Ponies (0-2) fell to the Portland Sea Dogs 2-0 at Hadlock Field on Friday night. Portland has taken the first two games of the three-game series.
The Sea Dogs (2-0) scored a run in the fifth and sixth inning. In the fifth, with runners on first and second with one out, Ceddanne Rafaela grounded into a force out at second, but an error on the return throw to first allowed Elih Marrero to score from second to put the Sea Dogs up 1-0. Portland tacked on a run in the sixth on Corey Rosier's two out RBI single to center.
The Ponies again didn't go down easily in the ninth, as with one out Rowdey Jordan and Brandon McILwain were both hit by pitches to bring the go-ahead run to the plate. Rio Gomez came in to retire the last two batters to earn his first save of the year.
Binghamton starter Dominic Hamel, making his Double-A debut, allowed just one hit and no runs over three and a third innings with four walks and seven strikeouts. Portland starter Shane Drohan (1-0), Theo Denlinger, Brendan Nail, and Gomez combined for a three-hit shutout. Drohan allowed just three hits and one walk over five innings with five strikeouts.
