Arkansas Travelers News Release

Ray Winder Field, Little Rock, AR - RHP Stu Pomeranz (5-0) retired the first 13 batters he faced and Nick Stavinoha hit a three-run homer (3) to propel the Springfield Cardinals (22-15) to an 8-4 victory over the Arkansas Travelers (14-24). In winning his third straight start, Pomeranz tossed seven innings and allowed three runs (two earned) on four hits and a walk with six strikeouts. Stavinoha, in his first game since May 1, came off the disabled list and whacked his home run in the fifth inning to give the Cardinals a 7-0 lead. The Travs were led by RF Matt Pali, who finished 3-for-4 with two doubles and three RBI. Greg Porter and Eric Rodland each collected two base hits, but the Cardinals had 11 hits and sent the Travs to their eighth loss in nine games. Arkansas RHP Chris Hunter (1-3) making his first start since April 30, came off the disabled list and allowed six runs (five earned) on nine hits and a walk in four innings.

Cardinals SS Mike McCoy began the game with a booming double to the center field wall. With one out in the first inning, Rico Washington lined a single to center field and McCoy scored when CF Dwaine Bacon misplayed the single for an error.

Back-to-back one-out singles by Josh Pressley and Jarrett Hoffpauir in the second inning set up Reid Gorecki for a two-out two-run triple to the center field wall and a 3-0 Cardinals lead.

Hunter retired six of seven hitters into the fifth inning, but allowed three consecutive hits and left the game. Gorecki led off with a bunt single followed by a line drive single by Washington. Juan Richardon hit the next pitch into center field to score Gorecki for a 4-0 Springfield lead. RHP Michel Simard entered the game and allowed Stavinoha's three-run homer which sailed over the scoreboard in left field and landed on the roof of Ricks Armory.

Porter collected the Travs first base hit, a one-out single in the fifth inning. Pali slapped a double off the left-field fence to score Porter.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, Rodland led off with a single but was forced out on a fielder's choice with Bacon getting aboard. Pomeranz threw wild to first attempting to pick Bacon off and then walked Aaron Peel. Bacon and Peel executed a double steal and then Bacon scored on a hard grounder by Wood to shortstop to cut the Cards' lead to 7-2.

Simard issued a one-out walk in the seventh inning and Pressley knocked in Iker Franco with a double to left field for an 8-2 Springfield advantage.

In the bottom of the seventh inning Hoffpauir muffed a one-out grounder by Jason Aspito for an error. Pali hit another double to center field to score Aspito for a 8-3 Cardinals lead.

The Travelers pen pitched well with RHP Miguel Gonzalez striking out two batters in a perfect eighth inning in his Class AA debut. RHP Bill Edwards pitched a shutout ninth.

The Cardinals used RHP Rich Scalamandre in the eighth and ninth innings. Porter began the ninth with a double and scored when Pali hit a one-out single to left. With two outs, Rodland beat a grounder to shortstop and the tying run came to the on-deck circle. The Cardinals brought in closer RHP Mark Worrell (10) and he induced Bacon's pop out for the save.
