Corpus Christi Hooks News Release

(SAN ANTONIO, Texas) - Jorge Cortes had three hits and Ben Zobrist and Hunter Pence each knocked in a pair of runs as the Hooks stretched their winning streak to nine games with a 7-4 win over the Missions in the opener of a five-game series in San Antonio Wednesday night. Corpus Christi, now 25-13 in the first half, maintains its 4½-game lead over Midland for first place in the Texas League South.

Zobrist gave the Hooks a lead they would not relinquish when he drilled a solo homer to right in the top of the first. The blast was his second this season, and it extended his current hitting streak to 16 games, tying him with Josh Anderson for the second longest hitting streak this season for the Hooks.

Pence also homered, leading off the fourth with his 12th dinger of the year to give the Hooks a 2-0 edge. He later knocked in a run when he reached first on a fielder's choice, giving him 37 RBI's this season. Pence leads the Texas League in both of those categories.

Cortes had a 3-for-4 evening that included a double, one run and one RBI. The Hooks' left fielder is now batting .358 on the road this season. J.R. House added two doubles and a run, and Josh Bonifay drove in a run with a double and scored in Corpus Christi's three-run top half of the fourth.

Chance Douglass (3-1) collected the win, scattering four runs and seven hits over seven innings of work. He walked two and struck out three and needed help from just one reliever, Jon Skaggs, whose two frames of shutout ball brought him his first save this year. Skaggs was the only reliever who did not pitch in Tuesday's 13-inning victory over Midland at Whataburger Field.

Josh Miller (5-3) toes the slab Thursday night when the Hooks try to make it 10 in a row in the win column. He'll be opposed by Missions' southpaw Jason Mackintosh (2-0). Live coverage of Thursday's game begins at 6:45 pm on 103.7, KOUL-FM.
