Cards Win Behind Pomeranz, Stavinoha
May 17, 2006 - Texas League (TL1)
Springfield Cardinals News Release
Stuart Pomeranz became one of only three pitchers in the Texas League to win five games this year, as the Springfield Cardinals snapped a four-game losing streak with an impressive 8-4 win over the Arkansas Travelers on Wednesday night. The Cardinals added to their lead in the North Division, as Tulsa, who lost to Wichita on Wednesday, is now two games behind Springfield.
Pomeranz (5-0) was masterful for the third straight start, working a total of seven innings on the night. He didn't allow an Arkansas base runner until Greg Porter's one-out single in the fifth inning. He allowed three runs, two earned, on just four hits on the night.
The struggling Springfield offense came up with a big game in support of the right-hander, scoring eight runs on 11 hits. The spark may have been from Reid Gorecki, who has struggled recently, but rebounded nicely with a two-hit, two-RBI night and an amazing catch against the wall in center field. The offense also got a lift from Nick Stavinoha. The outfielder had missed two weeks due to a severely sprained ankle. Stavinoha started in right field and crushed a three-run homer in the fifth inning, his third of the year.
Springfield took an early lead, as Mike McCoy led off the game with a double. With one out, Rico Washington singled to center field. On the play, Dwaine Bacon mishandled the ball, allowing McCoy to score, for a 1-0 lead.
The Cards got two in the second on Reid Gorecki's two-run triple, making it 3-0 against Arkansas starter Chris Hunter (1-3).
Springfield added to their lead, scoring four times in the fifth to take a commanding 7-0 lead. Juan Richardson extended his hitting streak to 12 straight, with an RBI single that scored Gorecki for a 4-0 lead. Stavinoha homered two batters later, a monster shot down the left field line, making it 7-0.
The Travs got on the board against Pomeranz in the bottom of the fifth, as Matt Pali knocked in his first of three runs with an RBI double. The first of Pali's three hits scored Greg Porter, making it 7-1.
Arkansas got one in the sixth and then traded a run with Springfield in the seventh. Springfield got their run on an RBI double from Josh Pressley, making it 8-2. The Travs capitalized on a Springfield error, scoring an unearned run off Pomeranz to make it 8-3.
Rich Scalamandre worked a scoreless eighth, but allowed a run in the ninth. Mark Worrell was then summoned out of the bullpen with runners at first and third and two outs. Worrell retired the only hitter he faced, getting Dwaine Bacon to pop up to Mike McCoy, securing his tenth save of the season.
Springfield will go for two straight, sending Mike Parisi (2-1) to the mound on Thursday night in Little Rock. Arkansas will go with right-hander Jesse Smith (3-2). Game time from Ray Winder Field in Little Rock is 7:10pm.
After the completion of their ten-game road trip, the Cardinals will return to Hammons Field on Monday, May 22nd for a seven-game home stand. Don't forget about Celebration City Night at Hammons Field on May 22nd, as the VeggieTales will be at the ballpark.
