Fayetteville Woodpeckers News Release
KANNAPOLIS, NC - After falling behind on an early home run, the Fayetteville Woodpeckers (17-26) bounced back with a three-run sixth inning, and added on late in a 6-2 victory over the Kannapolis Cannon Ballers (12-32) on Thursday night at Atrium Health Ballpark. On the pitching end, Peyton Plumlee (W, 2-1) enjoyed a season-long outing and Shea Barry (S,1) secured a four-inning save.
Making his fourth start of the season, Plumlee struck out two in the first before allowing a leadoff home run to Luis Miesis in the second that put Kannapolis ahead 1-0. Jesus Valles preserved the lead by allowing just two Fayetteville hits over five shutout innings. Plumlee also worked through a season-long five innings, setting a new high mark with six strikeouts, and qualifying for the win once Fayetteville broke through in the sixth.
Ronaldo Urdaneta and Kenedy Corona started the sixth with singles against Martin Carrasco (L, 1-2), and Bryan Arias drew a walk to load the bases. Carrasco then uncorked a wild pitch that scored Urdaneta and knotted the game at 1-1. Nate Perry followed with a dribbler to the left side of the mound, allowing time for Corona to cross and give Fayetteville a 2-1 lead. Jordan Brewer capped the three-run inning with an RBI single, his first of two hits on the night.
A throwing error from Arias in the seventh extended the inning for Harvin Mendoza, who cut the game to 3-2 with an RBI double, an unearned run to the line of Barry.
Fayetteville added the needed insurance in the eighth against Sammy Peralta after J.C. Correa was hit by a pitch and Brewer reached on his second single of the game. Luke Berryhill lifted a high fly out to center field that brought home Correa from third. An overthrow to the plate on the play managed to squeeze through the backstop netting, and Brewer was granted home plate to make it a 5-2 game.
Kenedy Corona capped the 6-2 score in the top of the ninth with an RBI double. Barry followed with his fourth complete inning, closing the game with a popout from D.J. Gladney and recording his first save of the year.
The series continues on Friday night with first pitch scheduled for 7:00 pm ET. Fayetteville is scheduled to start Jayson Schroeder and Kannapolis will start LHP Bailey Horn.
