Birds Drop Game Four in Columbia 6-2
June 25, 2021 - Carolina League (CarL)
Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
After three straight wins, the Myrtle Beach Pelicans have now lost two straight as the Columbia Fireflies took the fourth game of the series 6-2 on Friday night. The loss brings the Birds back to five games under .500 at 20-25, while the Fireflies improve to 24-18 this season.
Hits were hard to come by for the blue and gold as Ryan Reynolds (2-4, 2B) was the only Pelican with multiple hits on the evening. Luis Verdugo (1-4, 2 RBI) brought home both runs for Myrtle Beach in the second inning. Myrtle Beach knocked just five hits for the game.
Richard Gallardo (1-4) took his team-leading fourth loss of the year after tossing just under five innings with six hits allowed with five runs sacrificed, four being earned. Jake Reindl gave up one earned run in relief in his 1.1 innings, while striking out three.
The Fireflies totaled eight hits for the evening with Herard Gonzalez (2-5, 2B, 2 RBI) leading the team with two hits and two runs driven in. Lead-off hitter Maikel Garcia (2-4, RBI, 2 R) also brought home a run with a multi-hit performance. He also added two stolen bases off Pelicans' catcher Pablo Aliendo.
Both teams started off hot, with Columbia starting the game off with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first. After Gallardo retired the first two batters, Darryl Collins drew a walk to get on base. Kale Emshoff came up next and hit a single to right field that brought home Collins, Emshoff got to second on a fielding error by Jonathan Sierra. Brady McConnell followed with another hit to right field to score Emshoff and put the home team in front 2-0.
The Pelicans would match the early lead with two runs of their own in the top of the second. Matt Mervis walked, and Jordan Nwogu was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second with one out. Ryan Reynolds came up and hit a soft liner to right field for a single, where Mervis was held up at third to load the bases. Verdugo followed with a bloop single to center that scored two runs and evened the game 2-2.
Columbia took the lead back in the bottom half. After the first batter struck out, Gage Hughes singled and stole second base, where he advanced to third after Aliendo's throw went wild to second. Garcia followed with a hard-hit ground ball to center field that scored Hughes and put the Fireflies back on top. After Garcia swiped second on a stolen base, Gonzalez doubled to center to bring home another run and Columbia had a 4-2 lead after two innings.
The Fireflies put on a run of insurance in both the fifth and the sixth innings. Garcia walked to start out the fifth frame and advanced to second on a balk from Reindl. Gonzalez followed with a single to left field to bring in Garcia. In the sixth, Diego Hernandez led off with an infield single and stole second base to get into scoring position. Hernandez got to third on a groundout from Hughes and came home on a Reindl wild pitch to break the game open at 6-2.
Myrtle Beach and Columbia will move to game five on Saturday night with the series tied at two games apiece. First pitch is set for 6:35 p.m.
