Delmarva Shorebirds News Release

SALISBURY, MD - The Delmarva Shorebirds scored early and often as they upended the Fredericksburg Nationals 6-3 on Friday night at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium.

The Shorebirds (28-16) got out to an early lead as they jumped on Nationals (14-32) starter Karlo Seijas.

Mason Janvrin was hit by the second pitch of the game from Seijas before Hudson Haskin drew a walk. One out later, TT Bowens demolished a three-run homer to left-center, his fourth of the season, giving Delmarva an early 3-0 lead.

The FredNats responded in the top of the second. With one away, Ricardo Mendez reached on an error before Kevin Strohschein ripped a two-run homer just over the wall in left, his first of the year, cutting the Shorebirds lead to 3-2.

Clutch two out hitting extended the Shorebirds edge in the bottom of the second. Jean Carmona started the rally with a one out single before Mason Janvrin walked. After a line out, Darell Hernaiz reached on an error to load the bases. TT Bowens then worked a walk to force home Carmona, making it 4-2 Delmarva. Yorkislandy Alvarez capped the inning by ripping a two-run single to center, despite Bowens getting caught in a rundown between third and home to end the inning.

A wild play led to a FredNats run in the fourth. Kevin Strohschein sliced a fly ball towards the right field corner that Cristopher Cespedes chased after and ended up going head-over-heels over the sidewall as the ball dropped in the right field corner. Strohschein never stopped running and scored on the play, his second homer of the day, to make it 6-3 Delmarva.

From there though, both pitching staffs held steady with Ryan Watson guiding the Delmarva ship home. Watson at one point retired 11 in a row, before stranding two runners on to end the game.

Watson (3-1) earned the win for the Shorebirds with five shutout frames, allowing just four hits while striking out seven.

Seijas (1-6) was dealt the loss for the FredNats, going five frames while allowing six runs (three earned) on five hits and three walks, striking out two.

Shane Davis started for Delmarva and worked four solid frames, giving up three runs (two earned) on four hits and four strikeouts.

Bowens snapped an 0-for-18 streak with his first inning homer, his first of the year at Perdue Stadium. In his second Delmarva contest, Alvarez finished 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs and is now 4-for-7 with the Shorebirds.

Strohschein provided the only runs of the game for the FredNats with his first two homers of the season. Onix Vega also had a multi-hit game, going 2-for-4 with a double.

The Shorebirds go for the early series win against the FredNats on Saturday, June 26, at Perdue Stadium. Noah Denoyer (3-2, 3.95) draws the start for Delmarva while the FredNats hand the ball to Michael Cuevas (0-0, 0.98). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. with pregame coverage starting at 6:50 p.m. on MiLB.TV and Fox Sports 960 AM with Sam Jellinek on the call.
