Vancouver Canadians News Release

(Avista Stadium - Spokane, WA) - After digging themselves into a 12-run deficit after just two innings, the Vancouver Canadians (14-10) battled back against the Spokane Indians (13-11) scoring eight unanswered runs, falling 12-8 on Sunday night out at Avista Stadium in front of 4,645 fans.

It was a night to forget for Canadians starter RHP Blake McFarland who lasted just 1/3 of an inning, giving up eight earned runs on just five hits as the Indians sent 15 hitters to the plate in an 11-run bottom of the 1st inning. RHP Nick Purdy came in out of the bullpen and couldn't stop the bleeding as gave up four earned to put the Indians offense in cruise control early up 12-0 after just two innings.

The Canadians finally got to Spokane starter LHP Kyle Lamb in the top of the 3rd inning when C Pierce Rankin was hit-by-a-pitch, advanced to second by stealing his 2nd base of the summer and coming around to score on a hard hit single from DH Shane Opitz cutting the lead to 12-1.

After grabbing a run in the top of the 5th inning, Vancouver struck for five runs in the top of the 6th inning sending nine hitters to the plate including SS Shane Opitz who hit a double down the right field line with the bases loaded scoring RF Nick Baligod, LF Steve McQuail and C Pierce Rankin to bring the Canadians to within striking distance, as Spokane lead 12-7.

Vancouver scored again in the top of the 8th inning when C Pierce Rankin doubled to left field and scored on a single from 2B Jon Berti that had the fans out at Avista Stadium suddenly wondering if the 12-run lead would hold.

The Canadians simply couldn't dig themselves out of their early struggles as Indians RHP Kyle Hendriks retired the C's in order in the top of the 9th inning to lock down the 12-8 victory as Vnacouver scored eight unanswered runs, but fell short to fall to 14-10 on the summer.
