Plenty of Festivities on Tap for Warriors' Home Opener Friday
September 28, 2021 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Moose Jaw Warriors News Release
After 570 days away, regular season hockey returns to Mosaic Place on Friday night when the Moose Jaw Warriors host the Saskatoon Blades to kick-off the 2021-22 Western Hockey League season.
The Warriors are preparing to welcome fans back with a bang for the Winmar Home Opener.
"It's been two years since the Warriors have played in Moose Jaw and the biggest thing is just to come back and enjoy yourself," Jaret Schneider, Warriors director of business operations, said.
"We've got a great hockey team and there's another great team in Saskatoon coming down for the home opener, so it'll be a great game."
The home opener festivities start in the afternoon with the inaugural Warriors Horseshoe Tournament, which will be taking place across the street from Mosaic Place at 69 River St.
There will be 16 pits set up with 32 teams taking part with the event getting underway at 1 p.m.
"It's a big bracket format, so it'll just be a fun way to kick off the hockey season," Schneider said. "It's going to give some people something to play in and to watch, which will lead right up to the carnival events."
The Horseshoe Tournament will be a fundraising event for the Warriors Education Fund and has been organized with the help of Todd Hudson and the golf tournament committee, who have raised almost $1-million for the Education Fund.
"Todd and the whole crew have been just outstanding and putting this together and bringing sponsors back on board," Schneider said. "It's going to be a great event to just kick off the home opener and start the Warriors season."
Following the Horseshoe Tournament, the Winmar Home Opener festivities move across the street to Mosaic Place where the Warriors' Pre-Game Carnival will be taking place on the front pad.
"Hayley (Rushinko, Warriors manager of game day and special events) had the great idea to do a bit of a carnival theme for kids and people of all ages just to have some games outside," Schneider said. "There will be all kinds of stuff taking place before the game, which will lead right up to puck drop."
There will be carnival games and food as well as an indoor beverage garden. The first 500 children at the game will receive goodie bags and there will also be a draw for a customized Warriors jersey.
Fans will also have the opportunity to be pre-screened for proof of vaccination at the carnival before heading into the arena for the game.
The Warriors and Mosaic Place are following the Government of Saskatchewan's COVID-19 guidelines requiring proof of vaccination or a negative test for entry into the arena this season. Masks are also required by all fans at all times within Mosaic Place.
"There's a whole bunch of new things that people aren't used to," Schneider said. "We're trying make things as safe as possible for fans and comfortable so they want to come to games."
Fans are encouraged to allow extra time for COVID-19 screening when entering the arena.
The doors open at 6 p.m. on Friday and puck drops at 7 p.m. Tickets are available here or at the Mosaic Place Box Office.
