Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release
After putting up 14 runs to start the series, the Winnipeg Goldeyes have had their scoring dry up at the worst possible time.
For the second straight night, the Goldeyes were on the wrong side of a one-run game, losing 3-2 to the Trois-Rivieres Aigles before 1,315 spectators at Stade Fernand-Bedard.
The loss leaves the Goldeyes with a 37-45 record on the season and 6 ½ games back of the Laredo Lemurs and Joplin Blasters in the American Association wild card chase, pending the outcome of tonight's games.
Things started great for the Goldeyes Wednesday night, as they scored two runs in the top of the first inning. Adam Heisler and Casio Grider led off the game with back-to-back singles and went to third and second base respectively on a double steal. Heisler then scored on a Reggie Abercrombie groundout and Grider followed him a batter later on a Casey Haerther single. But, that turned out to be the last run scored by the Goldeyes.
After Trois-Riveres scored twice in the bottom of the first, the game stayed tied 2-2 until the bottom of the eighth inning. The Goldeyes loaded the bases for the Aigles with an intentional walk and one out. Winnipeg narrowly missed turning an inning-ending double play with the next batter and the winning run scoring from third.
Heisler had two hits to lead the Goldeyes, who had only seven hits in the game.
Winnipeg starter Tony Smith settled in after the first inning to post a quality start. He gave up just two runs and struck out a pair in six innings of work.
Newcomer Johnnie Lowe suffered the loss for the Goldeyes, while reliever Edilson Alvarez earned the win for the Aigles and Kaohi Downing picked up the save.
The two teams meet for the fourth and final time in the series Thursday night in Trois-Rivieres. Matt Jackson (6-8, 5.13) will take the ball for the Goldeyes, as they try to split the series.
