Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release

Gary, Ind. - After the Gary SouthShore RailCats completed the unfinished business at the resumption of Tuesday night's affair, the Joplin Blasters jumped on the 'Cats early to split the doubleheader Wednesday night at the U.S. Steel Yard.

Tuesday night's contest, which was suspended due to rain, was resumed at 6:04 p.m. at the Steel Yard, with the RailCats leading 3-0 with the bases loaded in the bottom of the fourth.

The 'Cats (39-43) failed to capitalize on their one-out opportunity in the fourth, but Andy Roberts, taking over for Rene Solis who started the game Tuesday, retired all nine batters he faced in a perfect three innings to secure the RailCats 3-0 win.

The Blasters (43-37) jumped all over RailCats' ace Charle Rosario (12-6) to take a 5-0 lead in the second inning.

The 'Cats couldn't muster much offense off Joplin starter Josue Montanez (3-2) but got a run off Victor Capellan in the sixth before Winson Abreu came on to shut the door for the four-out save in the seven-inning doubleheader contest.

Ne RailCat Dustin Geiger went 2-for-6 through the two contests, and Spencer Mahoney, also making his first start with the team, went 1-for-2 with two walks and an RBI.

The teams wrap up the four-game set Thursday night in Gary, with the RailCats trailing the wild card-leading Blasters by 4.5 games in the hunt for the postseason.

Rookie righty Fernando Gonzalez (2-1) goes for the RailCats as Joplin counters with righty Luis Chirinos (3-1).
