Lake Erie Crushers News Release
AVON, Ohio- The Lake Erie Crushers and the Frontier Greys split the Sunday double header. In the first game, the Greys scored early and then again in the eighth to win in extra innings, 3-2. In the second game, the Crushers scored two in the sixth for a comeback victory, 2-1.
The split for the Crushers (31-40) puts their record at 4-5 for the home stand. The Greys (34-38) are 8-4 this season in double headers.
In the first game, the Greys were able to jump on the board first. Shane Brown led the game off with a single. Julio Rodriguez then doubled to put runners on second and third. Brandon Tierney singled to score Brown and Rodriguez moved to third. When Scott Carcaise grounded into a fielder's choice to second, Rodriguez scored to put the Greys up by two runs.
In the top of the third inning, fireworks on the field became the story of the game. After Rodriguez popped out to first in foul territory, he was then ejected for yelling at the umpires from the dugout. As Rodriguez walked toward the clubhouse, he yelled at the Crushers players along the way, eventually causing the Crushers to clear the dugout and run toward Rodriguez. After it was settled, umpire Brian Miller gave warnings to both benches. Lake Erie manager, Chris Mongiardo was ejected for arguing as well. The scene was settled and the Greys went one, two, three in the inning.
Greys' starter Max Duval (1-1) had a perfect game going into the fifth inning until the Crushers bats came alive. Anderson Hidalgo led off the inning with a base hit and moved to second on a base hit by Juan Sanchez. The next two Crushers hitters would be retired but Boo Vazquez stepped up with two outs and hit a two-run single into left-center field to tie the game.
The tie would send the game into extra innings and in the top of the eight, the Greys would score the go ahead run as they hit four singles in the inning. Matt Williams, who replaced Rodriguez in the third, led the inning off with a base hit. He would come to score on a bases loaded single by Michael Antonio.
For the Crushers, starter Zach Morton pitched 6 1/3 strong innings, allowing seven hits but limiting the Greys to two runs while striking out five. Mike Devine came on and threw 2/3 of an inning to close out the seventh. Daniel DeSimone (2-2) started the eighth inning and gave up a run on three hits in 1/3 of an inning and picked up the loss. Brad Duffy finished the eighth inning.
For the Greys, Duval went seven innings allowing three hits and two runs, also striking out eight Crushers for the win. Nick McBride (4) came into the game in the eighth, giving up two walks but shutting the door for the save.
In the second game, the Greys opened up the scoring again. Brown led off the top of the first with a double. He would move to third on a groundout to short hit by Antonio. Brown scored the first run of the game on a groundout to second by Brandon Tierney.
The Greys starter, Bobby Shore (5-6), was pitching a no hitter until the sixth inning. Chandler Brock was hit by a pitch to start the inning. Austin Prott walked and then both moved up a base via a Brendan Costantino sacrifice bunt. With two outs, Hidalgo broke up the no-hitter with the Crushers first base hit of the game through the left side of the infield that plated both Brock and Prott and gave the Crushers the lead.
On the mound for Lake Erie, Brad Zambron started and went 4 2/3 innings striking out three, allowing three hits and giving up only one run. Trevor Longfellow (5-5) came on and picked up the win. He went 2 1/3 innings, striking out one batter.
On the Greys side, Bobby Shore is saddled with the loss after he went six innings, giving up one hit and two earned runs.
The Crushers will begin a three game road series with the Southern Illinois Miners on Tuesday. The Crushers will send right hander Hunter Adkins (3-5, 2.91) to the mound. The first pitch in the series is scheduled for 8:05.
