Game #72 - Road Game #33 (34-37), (18-14)

Last time out...

The Freedom won 4-2 in 10 innings on Saturday night as they scored two in the ninth and two in the tenth to stun the Slammers. Joliet took a 1-0 lead in the fourth thanks to a pair of Freedom errors. Joe Staley added a sacrifice fly in the sixth to extend the Slammers lead to 2-0. Zach Wendorf was great for Florence, tossing five innings of one-hit ball. The Freedom had a runner reach base in every inning but failed to score through eight. Then in the ninth, Steve Carrillo drew a walk. Daniel Fraga reached on a single and Zac Mitchell singled home pinch runner Mason Salazar. Sam Eberle singled home Fraga to tie the game. Then in the 10th, Gonzalez got things started with a double. Zack Burling bunted him to third and Salazar singled him home. Fraga reached on a bunt single and Mitchell lined a shot under the glove of Mike Garza at third to score another run and extend the lead to 4-2. Ed Kohout (4-3) worked two innings of scoreless ball to get the win out of the bullpen.

For Starters...

Cody Gray makes his seventh start of the season today for the Freedom. Florence has won all six of his starts. In Gray's last outing he got a no-decision, going three innings of one-run ball on August 2 against Washington in an 8-5 Freedom win. Gray has given up a total of two runs over his past 20.1 innings pitched. A product of NAIA school Northwood University, Gray went 8-3 in 12 starts in 2015, finishing with an ERA of 1.69. Impressively, Gray struck out 101 batters in 85 innings. In 2014 Gray appeared in seven games, picking up five wins. Also struck out 37 batters in 42.2 innings as a starter. Named a Pre-season All-American pitcher.

Welcome back!

The Freedom activated outfielder Austin Newell from the 14-Day Disabled List. Newell was hitting .376 with 4 HR and 22 RBI when he was placed on the DL back on June 24. To make room for Newell the Freedom released RHP Jason Postill today.

Going for the sweep...

If the Freedom win today it would be their second series sweep of the Slammers this season and their third series sweep overall. Their other series sweep was a sweep of the Schaumburg Boomers at Boomers Stadium before the All-Star break.

How about that comeback?!

The Freedom's win last night was only their second when trailing after eight innings this season. Their other win when trailing after eight also came on the road, a 7-5 win over the Gateway Grizzlies back on May 27.

Going the extra mile...

Last night's extra innings win for Florence continues their success in extra frames on the road. Florence has a record of 3-1 in extra innings away from home but only 1-3 at UC Health Stadium.

Glovework...

The Freedom are tied for the best fielding percentage in the league at .981 while the Slammers have the worst fielding percentage in the league at .964.

Walk this way...

The Freedom have drawn 268 walks this season, the second most in the league.

Road Warriors...

The Freedom are 18-14 away from home so far in 2015. Meanwhile Joliet is 18-23 at home. A win today would match the Freedom's longest road winning streak this season (four games).

Run like the wind...

The Freedom have stolen 116 bases this season, the most in the Frontier League. They have also been caught 53 times, the most in the league.

Get that lead...

The Freedom are 26-1 when holding the lead after the completion of seven innings.

Low scores...

The Freedom have scored three or fewer runs in each of their last 14 losses.

Five is the magic number...

The Freedom are 23-3 when they score five or more runs in a game this season.
