Pitching Leads Rome to 6-1 Win Over Delmarva

Rome, Ga. - Rome Braves starter Willie Kempf held the Delmarva Shorebirds (45-51, 10-16) to three hits over seven innings to key a 6-1 win on Wednesday night at State Mutual Stadium in Rome, Georgia. The Shorebirds managed just four hits, two of which came in the fourth inning. The Shorebirds have lost four in a row.

In the second inning, Evan Gattis hit a solo home run over the right field wall to give Rome a 1-0 lead.

Rome added three more runs in the third. Kyle Rose and Tony Mueller reached to open the inning. Then, Matt Lipka placed a sacrifice bunt to move both runners into scoring position. Edward Salcedo followed with a flare single into shallow right to bring in two runs. Two batters later, Evan Gattis hit a blooper into right-center field to lift the R-Braves to a 4-0 lead.

Rome tacked on two runs in the fourth on RBIs by Mueller and Salcedo to take a 6-0 lead.

The Shorebirds scored their lone run in the eighth inning. Brenden Webb singled and relief pitcher Tyler Hess walked Ty Kelly and Jeremy Nowak to load the bases. Then, Michael Ohlman hit a high chopper towards the shortstop to produce the run.

Willie Kempf picked up his first win of the season over seven shutout innings. He allowed just one runner to advance beyond second base.

Matt Bywater allowed eight hits and six runs over four innings in his debut with the Shorebirds. He struck out two and walked two.

Tim Adleman held the R-Braves scoreless over three innings in relief of Bywater. Adleman struck out five and walked just one batter. David Walters tossed a scoreless eighth inning.

The Delmarva Shorebirds and Rome Braves square off in game two of the series on Thursday night at 7:05 p.m. RHP David Baker is the scheduled starter for Delmarva.
