Rome Emperors News Release
Rome, GA - The Rome Braves defeated the Delmarva Shorebirds 6-1 Wednesday night at State Mutual Stadium before a crowd of 2,097. The two teams will meet again tomorrow night at 7pm for game two of the three game series.
Evan Gattis (12) put the Braves on top in the bottom of the second with a towering opposite field homer to give Rome an early 1-0 lead. The Braves would strike again in the bottom of the third for three more runs to push the lead to 4-0. After Matt Lipka moved two runners into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt, Edward Salcedo brought home both with a two RBI single down the right field line. Later in the inning Gattis scored Salcedo on an RBI single for the final run of the inning.
After loading the bases with no outs in the bottom of the fourth Tony Mueller delivered an RBI single making it a 5-0 game. One out later the Braves pushed the lead to 6-0 after Salcedo brought home David Rohm with his third RBI of the night on a fielder's choice.
The Shorebirds managed only one run on the night in the top of the eighth thanks to an RBI groundout by Michael Ohlman made it a 6-1 game. Delmarva went down in order in the ninth as the Braves take a 6-1 victory. The Shorebirds were held to one run on five hits thanks in large part to Willie Kempf turning in his strongest outing of the season. Kempf set the tone for the Braves tonight going seven innings giving up no runs and allowing only three hits while striking out five.
Willie Kempf (1-3) earns the win for Rome and Matt Bywater (0-1) takes the loss for Delmarva.
The Braves look for their third consecutive win tomorrow as the two teams meet again for game two of the series at 7pm. For ticket information, contact the Rome Braves at 706-378-5144 or log onto www.romebraves.com.
