Pitcher Tyler Sulina Returns from Disabled List
August 18, 2015 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AUGUST 18, 2015) -- The Chicago Cubs have activated Pelicans right-handed pitcher Tyler Skulina from the 7-day disabled list. In a corresponding roster move, catcher Jordan Hankins has been placed on the 7-day disabled list.
Skulina, 23, was placed on the disabled list on June 28 and missed a total of 47 games played with the Pelicans. The six-foot, five-inch-tall righty made three appearances with the AZL Cubs from August 10-15, including one start, and threw a total of 3 1/3 innings. In those brief rehab outings, Skulina allowed one run on five hits while striking out four and walking a pair.
Before being placed on the disabled list, Skulina carried a 2-4 record with the Pelicans and he lead the team with 59 strikeouts, which at the time was also the fifth-most among Cubs minor leaguers and the fourth highest strikeouts per nine innings in the Carolina League. His 3.05 ERA ranked ninth among Carolina Leaguers, and tenth in the Cubs' minor league system, and with his stint with the AZL Cubs, he has lowered it to 3.03. While his ERA no longer ranks among the top ten in the CL, it now ranks seventh-best in the Cubs system. He returns to the Pelicans holding Carolina League batters to a .200 average, which at the time he was placed on the DL was the lowest in the circuit, and it would be the lowest if he qualified. Six of his 12 starts this season have been quality outings, highlighted by a season-high seven-inning, two-hit shutout of Lynchburg on June 12. He has allowed one or fewer earned runs in seven of his starts and one or fewer earned runs in his final four starts before heading to the disabled list.
A native of Strongsville, Ohio, Skulina was originally selected by the Oakland Athletics in the 46th round of the 2010 MLB June Amateur Draft Walsh Jesuit High School but signed with the Cubs after they selected him in the fourth round out of Kent State University in 2013.
Hankins, 23, is batting .227, having collected five doubles, one home run, and 6 RBI in 23 games with Myrtle Beach. From Wentzville, MO, the Cubs took Hankins in the 11th round of the 2013 MLB June Amateur Draft from Austin Peay State University.
The Pelicans' roster is now at 25 active players, the Carolina League Limit, and includes six players on the disabled list.
The Pelicans open up a three-game series with the Winston-Salem Dash Tuesday, August 18, starting at 7:00 p.m. ET.
The 2015 season marks the 17th season for the Pelicans franchise and first as the Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Chicago Cubs. For information on tickets to see the Pelicans in 2015, please call (843) 918-6000, e-mail info@myrtlebeachpelicans.com, or visit www.MyrtleBeachPelicans.com.
