Pit Spitters Rally in Ninth for Walk-Off 2-1 Win

Traverse City, MI - The Pit Spitters saved the drama for late, coming from behind in the ninth inning to beat the Wisconsin Woodchucks for their third walk-off win of the season in front of a packed Pit Spitters Park.
The home side faced a 1-0 deficit going into the bottom of the ninth and went down to their last strike before Andrew Morrow (JR Michigan State) worked a walk to get the rally going. His walk was followed by a single from Jake Wilson (JR Bowling Green,) putting runners at the corners with two outs. Wilson attempted a stolen base on the first pitch of the next at-bat, prompting a throw down to second where nobody was covering; it sailed into center field, allowing pinch runner Drake Titus (JR Army) to score on the error. On the very next pitch, Kam Smith (SO Northern Illinois) smashed a single up the middle, plating Wilson and giving the Pit Spitters the 2-1 victory in game two of the two game set with the Woodchucks.
The prior eight innings had belonged to the pitchers. Pit Spitters starter Pat Hohlfeld (SO Jefferson) went the first six innings, allowing just one earned run on six hits. Woodchucks pitcher Greyson Fletcher was one strike away from a complete game shutout, but will instead take a tough-luck loss, going eight and two thirds innings, allowing just two runs on seven hits, striking out five. Luke Little (FR San Jacinto) earns his first Pit Spitters win, striking out two batters in a clean top of the ninth.
The Pit Spitters return to action Saturday with a 7:05 p.m. road matchup against the Battle Creek Bombers. They return home Monday, July 22, for a 7:05 p.m. matchup with the Kokomo Jackrabbits. Every Monday is "Dime Dog Monday," at Pit Spitters Park, with 10 cent hot dogs. Gates will open at 6:00 p.m.
