Pit Spitters End Road Trip with Dominant Pitching Performance

June 30, 2021 - Northwoods League (Northwoods)
Traverse City Pit Spitters News Release

Traverse City, MI - Two of the top teams in the Northwoods League split the series for the third time, as the (15-13) Kenosha Kingfish took game one of the series and the (19-11) Traverse City Pit Spitters took game two.

Game One

Play for the first game started on Monday. Zeb Roos led off the game with a walk, stole third and scored on a Tito Flores ground out. Kenosha answered in the bottom half of the first. In the third, Roos doubled, advanced to third on a flyout and scored on a wild pitch. But once again, Kenosha answered in the bottom half to tie it.

After the fourth inning. Rain brought the tarps out, and eventually the game was suspended. Play resumed Tuesday with the Pit Spitters taking the lead again in the sixth, as Adam Proctor singled home Miles Simington.

For the third time, Kenosha answered, this time taking the lead. After going up 4-3 on a two-RBI single, John Beuckelaere got what should have been strike three on Kenosha's Kirk Liebert. After an umpire meeting, they ruled the swing a foul tip, resulting in an argument and ejection for head coach Josh Rebandt. Liebert doubled home a run on the next pitch, but Beuckelaere stranded the bases loaded to avoid further damage.

Kenosha added one more in the bottom of the right and went on to win 6-3.

Game Two

Pitching ruled the day in the second game. Because of the double header, the second game went only seven innings. The scoring got started right away. Trey Yunger walked and Mario Camilletti and Tito Flores singled to start the game. Chris Monroe got an RBI to score Yunger. Another run was added on a Miles SImington sacrifice fly, but the umpires ruled he left early, taking a run off the board and ending the inning. Kenosha scored one run in the bottom of the second, but left the bases loaded.

Rylan Tinsley (1-2, 8.35) pitched his best game of the year. He went four innings, giving up four hits and striking out four, only allowing the one run. He stranded the bases loaded twice and struck out Kirk Liebert, one of the top hitters in the league, twice.

Mario Camilletti singled home the go-ahead run in the fifth, scoring Adam Proctor. Camilletti singled twice in both games, extending his on-base streak to 15 games.

Coby Greiner (1-0, 0.66) pitched two scoreless, stranding multiple runners in the fifth and one in the sixth. He struck out Liebert to end the sixth and preserve the 2-1 lead. It's the only time in 25 games he has failed to reach base safely.

Monroe singled home Flores in the seventh for his team-leading 19th RBI of the season, giving closer Evan Gates all he needed to close it. He pitched a perfect seventh to lock down the save (7) and secure the series split. Traverse City has still never lost a series.
