Bristol State Liners News Release

After dropping Saturday's game on a walk-off grand slam, the Bristol Pirates bounced back in the series finale as they defeated the Elizabethton Twins 4-1 on Sunday.

The win improved the Pirates' record to 5-4 against the Twins this season, as Bristol secured its first winning season against Elizabethton in more than 14 years. After Sunday's win, the Pirates now need 14 more wins in order to secure their first winning season since 2008.

The Twins scored their only run of the night in the bottom of the second inning, when center fielder DaShawn Keirsey drew a bases-loaded walk to put Elizabethton up 1-0. Center fielder Chase Murray tied the game up in the next inning on a sacrifice fly before right fielder Fernando Villegas hit an RBI single to center to give the Pirates a 2-1 lead. Murray would add another run in the fifth on an RBI double to center, and left fielder Jake Snider drove in the final run of the night on a bunt single in the top of the seventh that scored first baseman Ernny Ordonez from third. Alex Roth entered the game in the bottom of the seventh and allowed only one hit over the final three innings to earn his second career save.

Starter Jose Maldonado snapped a four-game losing streak on Sunday, allowing just one run on five hits and three walks while striking out four over five innings to earn his third win of the season. Yordi Rosario picked up his Appalachian League-leading fourth hold of the season after allowing one hit and one walk with one strikeout in one inning of work. Roth improved to 2-2 in save opportunities on the year after allowing one hit with four strikeouts over three innings of relief.

Designated hitter Aaron Shackelford and third baseman Jesus Valdez led the team with two hits each, with Shackelford also picking up his 12th double of the season. Murray finished 1-for-3 with a double and a team-high two RBI, while catcher Eli Wilson finished 1-for-3 with a double, a walk and a team-leading two runs scored.

The Pirates (20-23) moved back into sole possession of third place in the Appalachian League West Division with the win, and they now sit 4 1/2 games behind Johnson City and 2 1/2 games behind Elizabethton. They will continue their road trip on Monday when they begin a three-game series against the Danville Braves, before returning to Bristol on Thursday to open a four-game series with the Kingsport Mets.
