Pirates Nip Phantoms

GLENS FALLS, NY - Paul Byron and Derek Whitmore scored third period goals to lift the Portland Pirates to a 2-1 win over the Adirondack Phantoms 2-1 in an American Hockey League game played tonight at Glens Falls Civic Center.

Jhonas Enroth made 27 saves to support the Pirates victory, their second straight. Portland is now 16-8-1-1 on the season.

Luke Pither scored the lone Adirondack goal. The Phantoms dropped to 4-21-2-0 on the campaign.

The two teams played through a scoreless first period. Pither netted the only goal of the second midway through the period to give the Phantoms a 1-0 lead heading into the third. Byron tied the game with a power-play goal 21 seconds into the third and Whitmore connected for the eventual game winner eight minutes later to complete the scoring.

The Allied Home Mortgage Three Stars of the Game were 1. Enroth, 2. Adirondack goalie Michael Leighton and 3. Pither.

The Pirates complete weekend action tomorrow (Sunday) with a 3 p.m. game against the Manchester Monarchs. The game can be heard live on News Talk 95.5 WLOB and on-line at portlandpirates.com beginning with the pre-game show at 2:45 p.m.

The Pirates return home next Saturday (December 18) at 7 p.m. to take on the Monarchs. It's another Bud Light Hockey Night in Portland as Five County Credit Union will be providing a free Pirates T-shirt to the first 2,500 fans. Fans (18 years and older) will have the opportunity to win a chance at $10,000 in cold hard cash! The Pirates will also honor the area's High School Fall Champions.
