Pirates' Home Win Streak Comes to an End

PORTLAND, ME - Jamie Arniel scored 1:25 into overtime to lead the Providence Bruins to a 5-4 win over the Portland Pirates in an American Hockey League game played tonight in front of 4,274 at the Cumberland County Civic Center.

The loss was the first at home for the Pirates this season ending a franchise record, season opening seven-game winning streak. The Pirates are now 10-3-1-0 on the season.

Joe Colborne paced the Bruins with two goals in the game while singles went to Levi Nelson and Jordan Knackstedt. The Bruins won their second straight to improve to 4-5-1-1 on the campaign.

Paul Byron paced the Pirates with two goals. T.J. Brennan and Dennis Persson also scored for Portland.

The Bruins roared out of the gate scoring three times (Nelson, Knackstedt and Colborne) in the opening eight minutes to build a 3-0 lead. The Pirates began to chip away at the lead as Bryon and Brennan scored before the end of the first to make it 3-2 Providence after one. Portland got back on even terms four minutes into the second as Byron connected for his second of the game followed by Persson's goal to give the home side their first lead of the game, 4-3 late in second. The Bruins spoiled the rally by countering Persson's goal with Colborne's second of the game with less than 30 second left in the period sending the two teams to the third tied at four. It remained that way until Arniel's winner early in the OT.

The Pirates out shot the Bruins 40-35 in the game as David Leggio took the loss. Leggio started an allowed three goals on the first five shots and was replaced by Alex Petizian, who stopped all four shots he faced in 3:02 of playing time before Leggio returned to the crease to complete the game.

The Allied Home Mortgage Three Stars of the game were 1. Arniel; 2. Byron and 3. Colborne.

The Pirates return to action Wednesday when they travel to Springfield to take on the Falcons in a 7 p.m. start. The game can be heard live on News Talk 95.5 WLOB and on line at portlandpirates.com beginning with the pre-game show at 6:45 p.m.

The next Pirates home game takes place Saturday, November 13th when the Albany Devils visit the Civic Center for a 7 p.m. start.
