Portland Pirates News Release

Portland, Me. - The Portland Pirates (28-22-3-1) lost 3-2 in a shootout to the St John's IceCaps (26-23-6-2) on Wednesday Night at the Cross Insurance Arena in Portland. The Pirates' loss means that St. John's will be the victor of the inaugural Eimskip Port-to-Port Challenge, a special cup to represent the season series between the teams; the IceCaps were able to clinch the best of nine series with two games left to play.

The Pirates scoring didn't come until the final period of regulation--where they were able to tie the game and bring it to eventual overtime--but the real star of the show was St. John's' goalie, Connor Hellebuyck, who saved 41 out of 43 Pirates shots.

St. John's drew the first blow at 11:12 in the first period when Patrice Cormier netted a goal, assisted by Julien Brouillette and Blair Riley. They were able to hold the one-goal lead until the third period, despite nearly 16 minutes of power play time for the Pirates while the IceCaps led 1-0.

Philip Samuelsson tied the game 1-1 exactly 30 seconds into the third frame, assisted by teammates Joel Hanley and Alex Bolduc. Soon after, John Albert netted the go-ahead goal for the IceCaps at 1:08, assisted by Scott Kosmachuck and Jordan Hill. Jordon Southorn tied the game up for the Pirates 2-2 with a goal at 17:24, assisted by Bolduc and Evan Oberg.

Because regulation play ended in a tie, the game went to a seven-minute overtime period. No scoring occurred in the extra time, so the game went to a shootout. Portland elected to go first and sent out Jordan Szwarz. He was unable to get his shot past Hellebuyck. St. John's sent in Chase Balisy who netted his shot against Portland goalie Louis Domingue. In his rebuttal, Portland's Justin Hodgman was unable to score. The IceCaps then sent out John Albert, who's shot was blocked by Domingue. For their final attempt at the shootout, Bolduc took the ice for the Pirates but fired a shot to the high right of Hellebuyck, missing the net.

Louis Domingue (10-6-2) saved 24 out of 26 shots tonight. Hellebuyck (24-15-4) saved 41 of the 43 Pirate shots he faced, not including the shootout.

The Pirates are back in action at the Cross Insurance Arena on Saturday night, February 28, for Pink in the Rink Night presented by TD Bank. The Pirates will face off against the Manchester Monarchs at 7 PM. Some of the proceeds from tickets sales to the game will benefit the American Cancer Society's Making Strides Against Breast Cancer initiative. On Sunday they host the Springfield Falcons at 3 PM. Following the game there will be a Chalk Talk with a Pirates coach and player at the Holiday Inn by the Bay. For more information and to purchase tickets, call 207-PIRATES.
