Albany Devils News Release
Lowell, MA - Michael Leighton stopped 36 of 37 shots to lead the Portland Pirates (12-6-0-2) to a 2-1 victory over the Lowell Devils (9-7-1-1) at the Tsongas Arena Friday night.
Lowell came out firing in the first period, at one point opening up an 11-1 lead in shots. But Leighton kicked them all out and held the game scoreless through 20 minutes. Portland mustered just five shots on goal in the period, and had two of the three power plays during the opening frame.
The Devils took the lead with a Chris Minard goal at 6:01 of the second. Minard came down the left side and ripped a wrister over the shoulder of Leighton, which clanged off two posts before tickling the twine for his sixth goal in just nine games this season. The lead was short-lived, however, as Petteri Wirtanen potted his second goal of the season at 9:29 to make it 1-1.
The third period moved quickly, with no penalties and just one goal scored. Portland took the lead at 3:13 of the final stanza, with a goal by Simon Ferguson, his second of the campaign. Leighton made the lead stand, stopping all 12 Devils shots in the third and finishing with 36 in the game. Frank Doyle suffered the loss despite stopping 27 of 29 in net for the Devils.
The Devils travel to Albany for a 7:00 p.m. game against the Albany River Rats. They return home to host the Providence Bruins in the first meeting of the season between the two clubs. Game time is 4:05 p.m. There is a post-game skate on the Tsongas Arena ice, free for everyone in attendance, courtesy of Jeanne D'Arc Credit Union. A limited number of skates are available for use for no extra charge, or fans may bring their own to the game.
All Devils games, home and away, can be heard on WCAP 980AM with the Voice of the Devils, Ryan Johnston, or online through B2 Networks on www.lowelldevilshockey.com. For more information or to reserve your seats for this game, call the Devils office at (978) 458-PUCK.
