Pirates Announce Results from Skills Competition

PORTLAND, ME - Today the Portland Pirates held a skills competition at the Cumberland County Civic Center as part of the "Day of Hockey" to benefit the Barbara Bush Children's Hospital at Maine Medical Center. The skills competition was held to set a standard for the high school hockey skills competition that will take place during the "Day of Hockey" on February 19th, 2006. The competition included contests for the fastest skater, hardest shot, most accurate shot and stick-handling and agility. Full details for the "Day of Hockey" will be announced this Thursday at a press conference at 11:00 a.m. at the Cumberland County Civic Center.

The results of the Portland Pirates skills competition are as follows:

Dustin Penner 104 mph
Most accurate shot
Jordan Smith 4 targets on 8 shots
Stick handling/Agility
Ryan Shannon 15.68 seconds
Fastest skater
Ryan Shannon 12.90 seconds

The "Day of Hockey" will be held on February 19th, 2006 and starting at 9:00 a.m. with an open skate at the Cumberland County Civic Center. The open skate will be followed by the 2nd annual "Clash of the Classes" game between Cheverus and Cape Elizabeth High Schools at 12:00 p.m. At 4:05 p.m. the Portland Pirates will host the Hartford Wolf Pack. During the first and second intermissions, Cheverus and Cape Elizabeth will participate in their own skills competition. The video of the winners from the Portland Pirates skills competition will be shown for high school competitors to match or beat. The "Day of Hockey" will conclude with an hour long "Skate with the team."

The Barbara Bush Children's Hospital at Maine Medical Center provides and sponsors comprehensive, family-centered health care for the children of Maine and northern New England. The Barbara Bush Children's Hospital key activities include: collaborative delivery of integrated health care services to children, promotion of children's health, education of caregivers in the principles and practices of healthcare for children, advancement of the knowledge and care of children through clinical research, treatment of complex medical and surgical diseases in a tertiary care facility.
