Pirates and Penguins Meet for Final Time

Wilkes-Barre, PA - The Portland Pirates play the second game of their road trip tonight as they face the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins for the second and final time. Game time is 7 pm as the Pirates look to extend their road winning streak.

The Pirates started their road trip Wednesday with a 5-1 win over Binghamton. The Pirates scored on their first four power plays, and scored 5 unanswered goals after the Senators took a 1-0 lead. Chris Brown tallied two goals and Brandon Gormley added a goal and an assist to move to 7th in the AHL in defensive scoring. Andy Miele added two assists to continue his ascent up the Pirates record books and the AHL scoring standings. Mark Visentin made 22 saves to pick up the victory, his 11th of the year.

Wilkes-Barre/Scranton is on a two game losing skid, with their last game coming on Saturday where they were defeated by the Rochester Americans 4-0. Both Penguins goaltenders saw time, with Jeff Deslauriers making 15 saves in relief of Eric Hartzell. The Penguins were a perfect 5 for 5 on the penalty kill despite racking up 29 penalty minutes in the contest.

The Penguins defeated the Pirates in their last and only prior meeting this season by a 4-2 score at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee. Brandon McMillan and Brandon Gormley scored for the Pirates, with Gormley picking up a two point night. The Penguins got a pair of goals from Simon Despres and tallies from Philip Samuelsson and Scott Harrington for the win. Mark Visentin made 18 saves in the loss for the Pirates.

Specialize: The Pirates had a fantastic night on special teams Wednesday, scoring on their first 4 power plays and killing all 6 penalties. While the Pirates need to avoid the penalty kill, their power play ranking has steadily risen over the last month. Portland needs to capitalize on their chances on the man advantage tonight to keep their power play momentum going.
