Portland Pirates News Release
Wilkes-Barre, PA- The Portland Pirates allowed 3 goals in the first 4 minutes of the third period, and 4 in the period, en route to a 5-4 defeat to the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. Jordan Martinook scored the lone Pirates tally in the second period.
The first 19:20 of the first period passed without much incident, save for a spirited fight between Brett Hextall and Bobby Farnham. With 41 seconds remaining in the period, however, the Penguins took the lead. Connor Rowney snapped a one-timer past Pirates starter Mark Visentin for his first goal of the year, and Wilkes-Barre/Scranton took a 1-0 lead. The Penguins outshot the Pirates 10-4 in the first period.
The Pirates' special teams continued to impress, but this time the offense came from the penalty kill. After an interference call on Chris Brown, Jordan Martinook got a feed from Brett Hextall shorthanded and buried a shot past Eric Hartzell on the breakaway to tie the game. Martinook's goal came at 14:48 and was his 7th of the year. The Pirates' penalty kill continued to be tested, killing 2 penalties during the period and starting their 4th kill of the year to end the second.
The Penguins took control early in the third period. Just 20 seconds into the final frame, Andrew Ebbett, the former Portland Pirates, capitalized on the Klesla penalty that had rolled over from the second period, beating Visentin to give Wilkes-Barre a 2-1 lead. 50 seconds later, Spencer Machacek doubled the Penguins' lead with his 10th goal of the year and first as a Penguin. Ebbett struck again for the Penguins at 3:53 of the third and
Tom Kostopoulos took advantage of another Pirates penalty to give Wilkes-Barre the 5-1 lead. Despite the Pirates best efforts, Portland was unable to get shots on Hartzell, and the scored remained 5-1 as time expired.
The Pirates 10 game streak of scoring on the power play was snapped, as the Pirates went 0-2 on the man advantage. Portland was outshot 25- 13 during the contest, the last matchup of the year with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. The Penguins swept the season series 2-0.
