Clearwater Threshers News Release
DUNEDIN, Fla. - Ricardo Pinto delivered another dominant performance on Monday night, leading the Clearwater Threshers in a 6-3 victory over the Dunedin Blue Jays at Florida Auto Exchange Stadium.
Pinto (7-2) limited the Blue Jays to only three hits and two walks in 6.2 shutout frames, while racking up six strikeouts. The 21-year old right-hander has given the Threshers six or more innings in nine of his 11 starts since joining Clearwater.
Rhys Hoskins and Mitch Walding led the offense on Monday, with Hoskins launching his sixth home run and Walding knocking a pair of RBI doubles to pace the Threshers' 11-hit attack.
It was Hoskins who broke open the scoring in the second inning.
On a one-strike pitch, Hoskins jumped all over a fastball from starter Conor Fisk (0-2) and launched a shot into the trees out beyond left field. It was Hoskins' 15th homer total between Clearwater and Lakewood, placing him first amongst all Phillies farmhands.
One out later, Willians Astudillo singled to center and Aaron Brown pulled a base hit through the right side. With men at the corners, Walding ripped a double to the warning track in right-center to score Astudillo and make it 2-0. Brown would later cross the plate as well on a wild pitch.
The score held steady into the seventh, when Clearwater (31-20) tacked on another on Walding's second RBI double of the day, a deep drive off the wall in right-center. The Threshers made it 5-0 an inning later, when Dylan Cozens yanked a triple up the first base line to score Hoskins from first.
In the bottom half, Dunedin (21-28) rallied for three runs off Jesen Therrien to pull the deficit to two. It was the first time Therrien permitted more than one run since June 25, and the first time all season he surrendered three runs in an outing.
Carlos Tocci's two-out RBI single in the ninth made it 6-3, and Miguel Nunez entered in search of the final three outs. The Blue Jays loaded the bases with two down on a pair of walks and a hit batter, but Nunez struck out Matt Dean on a payoff pitch to end the ballgame, earning his sixth save in as many tries.
The Threshers and Blue Jays will face off for game three of the four-game set on Tuesday, with first pitch at 6:30 p.m. Matt Imhof (6-4) will take the hill for Clearwater against Sean Reid-Foley (1-5), and the call can be heard live on the Threshers Broadcast Network starting at 6:15 p.m.
