Daytona Tortugas News Release
Daytona Beach, FL - Daytona Tortugas RHP Nick Travieso has been named Florida State League Pitcher of the Week for the period of August 10 - August 16.
The 21-year-old from Pembroke Pines, FL threw five scoreless innings in each of his two starts this past week, totaling 10 shutout innings with two hits, four walks and six strikeouts. Travieso and LHP Seth Varner took a no-hitter into the seventh inning last Tuesday against the Blue Jays in Dunedin.
In Sunday's win over Brevard County, the right-hander held the Manatees to a pair of singles and retired the final eight batters he faced. Travieso combined with relievers LHP Nolan Becker, RHP El'Hajj Muhammad and RHP Carlos Gonzalez to record the final 22 outs of the game in order.
Travieso, a Florida State League Mid-Season All-Star, had missed nearly two months after taking a line drive to the forearm on June 15 in Fort Myers. His next start came on August 6. Since returning from the Disabled List -- while working on a limited pitch count -- Travieso is 2-0 with a 0.75 ERA, allowing one run in 12 innings.
Dating back to May 29, he's surrendered just two earned runs in his last seven combined outings (27 innings) for an 0.67 ERA.
Through his first 16 starts, Travieso is 5-5 with a 2.63 ERA, holding opponents to a .241 batting average with 62 strikeouts and 25 walks in 75.1 innings.
The Cincinnati Reds selected Travieso with the 14th overall pick in the 2013 draft out of Archbishop McCarthy High School in Fort Lauderdale, FL. He was named Reds Minor League Pitcher of the Year in 2014, posting a 14-5 record and a 3.03 ERA for the Class-A Dayton Dragons.
