Calgary Stampeders News Release

The Calgary Stampeders and the Canadian Cancer Society are teaming up to fight breast cancer for the third year in a row. The Stamps will feature their PinkPower initiative this Saturday, Sept. 25 against the BC Lions.

Newly created, limited-edition pink toques and scarves will be available at entrance gates for a minimum donation of $20, with all proceeds going directly to the Canadian Cancer Society. "Thing-a-ma-boob" key chains will also be available for $5.

On Tuesday, Sept. 21, the Stampeders will hold a photo opportunity to unveil the 2010 PinkPower toques and scarves. Details are as follows:

Who:

Stamps safety Wes Lysack and receivers coach Pete Costanza

Where:

McMahon Stadium - 1817 Crowchild Tr. NW

When:

Tuesday, Sept. 22 - noon to 12:15 p.m.

Lysack, the team's spokesperson for the Canadian Cancer Society for the past three seasons, is an integral part of the campaign that is near to his heart. Lysack's grandmother was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2007 and his paternal grandmother passed away from the disease when he was 10 years old.

"This is a cause that is close to me and my family and I'm very proud to support PinkPower," said Lysack. "I've worked with the Canadian Cancer Society for three years now and it's been an honour to contribute to their initiatives to raise money and awareness for this fight."

Costanza, who has supported the cause since its inception, is taking on a greater role with PinkPower this season. His sister, Michele, was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2007, received treatment and is now in full remission.

"This is a cause that I am very close to," said Costanza. "Cancer will inevitably effect everyone at some point in our lives and by supporting fundraisers like PinkPower, we can each make a difference in the fight."

PinkPower was conceived by Penny Hufnagel - wife of Stamps general manager/head coach John Hufnagel - in 2008 with limited-edition pinks hats being sold. Last year, toques and hats were featured and the product has sold out quickly in both previous years.

Lysack, an eight-year veteran of the Canadian Football League, in 2009 launched Lysack's Corner - a special block of seats dedicated to people fighting cancer and their caregivers for each Stamps home game.

In addition to providing $1.6 million to the Canadian Breast Cancer Research Alliance, the Canadian Cancer Society is also dedicating $2.4 million in 2010-2011 to fund a broad range of breast cancer research projects across Canada. This year, more than 23,000 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in Canada, and one in nine have a chance of developing breast cancer in her lifetime.
