Lancaster Stormers News Release
The first half of Sunday night's game belonged to Matt Pike. The second half belonged to Andres Perez.
Those two combined to help Bridgeport down Lancaster, 8-4, in the finale of a three-game series at Clipper Magazine Stadium as the Bluefish avoided a sweep.
Bridgeport grabbed a quick 2-0 lead before the Barnstormers could ever step to the plate. Adam Greenberg led off against Cesar Carrillo (2-7) with a homer to right. One out later, Luis Lopez singled to left, advanced on a wild pitch and scored when Wes Bankston cracked a double into the left field corner.
Carrillo settled down, but Pike (6-2) threw no-hit baseball for the first 4 1/3 innings and carried a 2-0 lead into the sixth.
That's when Perez took charge of the game. The Bridgeport utility infielder followed a Brock Peterson homer to left with a two-run shot onto the picnic deck for a 5-0 Bluefish lead.
The Barnstormers were able to finally get to Pike for a run in the bottom of the sixth when Brandon Jones doubled off the right field wall, took third on a wild pitch and scored on a ground out by Tommy Everidge.
Perez provided an answer with a two-out RBI double in the top of the seventh.
Lancaster was able to put a big scare into the Bluefish over their next two at bats. Adam Calderone and Ozzie Chavez both doubled in the bottom of the seventh to cut the lead to 6-2. J.C. Holt singled Chavez to third, chasing Pike from the game. Iggy Suarez' fly to shallow left was caught by Steve Moss. Chavez had no intent on scoring until Moss' throw back to the infield skipped away, and Lancaster had trimmed the lead to 6-3.
Matt Watson led off the bottom of the eighth with his second homer in two games. Aaron Herr followed with an impressive blast to left. The ball stayed in the yard, but Herr came to a halt between first and second and was tagged out on a long relay throw back to the infield. Angel Flores and Chavez both singled with two outs, but any further rally died when Holt struck out looking to end the inning.
Perez delivered again in the ninth, producing his fourth hit and fourth RBI, with a two-out double to right center off Jon Huber. He would later score an eighth run on an error.
Lancaster heads to Somerset to open a four-game, three-day series against the Patriots at TD Bank Ballpark. The Barnstormers will send Ross Peeples (6-4) to the mound on Monday evening against right-hander Nick Ungs. The game will be aired on Fox Sports Radio, 1490, WLPA and streamed on sportsjuice.com and ibnsports.com.
