Southern Maryland Blue Crabs News Release
Waldorf, MD - York first baseman Chris Nowak belted two homers and drove in four runs to give the York Revolution a 5-4 win over the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs to sweep a three-game series in front of a crowd of 2,332 at Regency Furniture Stadium. The Blue Crabs led at one time 3-0.
Southern Maryland did most of their damage in the first inning. After York starter Matt DeSalvo left the game having thrown only two pitches due to tightness in his chest, the Blue Crabs touched reliever Jack Spradlin for three runs and two homers. The first was a two-run blast by designated hitter Richard Giannotti (1), which was followed by a solo shot from leftfielder Brian Barton (3) to give the Blue Crabs a three-run lead. The homers were done in back-to-back fashion.
York, however, tied the game in the fourth as Nowak (7) unleashed his first homer, a three-run job over the leftfield wall, to tie the game at three apiece.
Southern Maryland had a chance to retake control of the game as they loaded the bases with no one out in the bottom half of the fourth. But centerfielder Jeremy Owens grounded into a 5-2-3 double play and Giannotti struck out to get the Revolution out of the threat.
York took the lead for good in the sixth as third baseman Vince Harrison (7) and Nowak (8) each hit solo homers to give the Revolution a 5-3 lead. It was Nowak's third homer of the series.
Southern Maryland tried to come back in the ninth as shortstop Tanner Townsend (6) led off the inning with a solo homer to cut York's lead to 5-4. But with runners at the corners and two out, closer Michael Nix struck out Barton looking to give the Revolution the three-game sweep.
For the third-straight game York put up double figures in hits (10) as Nowak went 3-4 with two homers, four RBI, and two runs scored. Harrison went 2-4 with a homer, double and two runs scored, while shortstop Liu Rodriguez chipped in with a 2-4 effort.
The Blue Crabs got a 2-4 outing from Giannotti with a homer, single and two RBI. Townsend aided the Southern Maryland cause by going 2-4 with a homer.
Reliever Lee Tabor (2-0) got the win in relief for York by going three scoreless innings, and Nix picked up his eighth save of the season. The loss went to Southern Maryland starter Michael Schlact (4-1) who allowed three homers and five runs in six innings of work, while allowing eight hits.
Southern Maryland now heads to Long Island where they will face the Ducks in a three-game series beginning tomorrow at 7:05. The Blue Crabs will send righty Nick Green (5-3, 4.54 ERA) to the hill against southpaw Heath Phillips (1-3, 5.01 ERA) of the Ducks. The game can be heard on www.somdbluecrabs.com.
