Southern Maryland Blue Crabs News Release

Waldorf, MD-Southern Maryland shortstop Yunesky Sanchez was signed by the Pittsburgh Pirates on Saturday night and assigned to their double-A affiliate in Altoona, PA (Eastern League).

The move comes as no surprise as Sanchez disemboweled Atlantic League pitching to the tune of a .403 average with seven homers and 40 RBI in 61 games. His 40 RBI were tied for a team-high. Sanchez's last appearance as a Blue Crab came in Wednesday's Atlantic League All-Star Game when he went 1-4 with a single.

At the time of his departure, Sanchez led the Atlantic League in average (.403) and hits (93), while finishing second in total bases (135). On July 5th, Sanchez was awarded with the Atlantic League's Player of the Month Award for June after hitting .450 in 27 games for the month. His accolade made him the second Blue Crab this season to win the Player of the Month Award after former first baseman Ryan Mulhern took the honors for May. Over his last 30 games, Sanchez hit an incredible .483 (60-124) with four homers and 30 RBI.

Sanchez becomes the third player for the Blue Crabs to be signed by an affiliated ball club this season after reliever Eduardo Morlan (Braves) and infielder Michael Cusick (Angels).

Southern Maryland and York will face off in the finale of their three-game series on today with first-pitch scheduled for 2:05 at Regency Furniture Stadium. Southern Maryland will send righty Michael Schlact (4-0, 3.70 ERA) to the hill against fellow righty Matt DeSalvo (6-3, 3.82 ERA) of the Revolution. The game can be heard on www.somdbluecrabs.com.
