Pawtucket Red Sox News Release
Pawtucket, RI- The Lehigh Valley IronPigs blasted four home runs to power past the Pawtucket Red Sox, 6-1, and earn a split of the two-game series on Thursday night at McCoy Stadium. All seven runs in the game came via the long ball. Mike Miller roped an opposite field home run in the third inning for Pawtucket's lone run of the game. It was Miller's first blast of the season. PawSox starter Justin Haley (7-5) allowed three runs on five hits in his five innings of work. He struck out six and walked two in his second start against the IronPigs (78-54) in eight days. Haley surrendered a pair of home runs for his second straight start, but he rebounded from his previous outing in which he allowed nine runs in two innings. Logan Moore lined a two-run shot (4) out to right field to open the scoring with no outs in the third inning. After Miller's blast in the next inning pulled Pawtucket (68-63) within a run, Darin Ruf knocked his 20th home run of the season over the left field fence in the bottom of the frame. Ruf's fourth dinger in his last four games against the PawSox extended Lehigh Valley's lead to 3-1. In the eighth inning, Cody Asche (4) and Brock Stassi (12) both launched home runs to right center field against Kyle Martin that built a 6-1 advantage. Robby Scott tossed 1.1 frames of scoreless relief, while Martin allowed three runs in his 1.2 innings pitched. Joe Kelly pitched around a single to center field in the ninth by fanning each of the other three batters he faced. "My fastball command has been pretty good," said Kelly. "Right now, I feel like I'm throwing the ball well and hopefully I keep doing it." Kelly has retired 23 of the 27 batters he has faced over his last six appearances. In 11 relief outings with Pawtucket, the righthander has surrendered one run in 14.0 innings for a 0.64 ERA with 23 strikeouts and one walk. IronPigs starter Phil Klein (4-1) held the PawSox to one run on five hits in 7.2 innings pitched to earn the win. He struck out seven and walked one. Rusney Castillo and Christian Vazquez each collected a pair of hits in the defeat. Pawtucket went 2-2 on the season's penultimate homestand to move its record to 16-4 over the club's last 20 home games. The PawSox embark on the season's final road trip, beginning with tomorrow night's 7:05 p.m. contest that opens a four-game set against the Syracuse Chiefs. Pawtucket lefthander Henry Owens (8-6, 3.70) is scheduled to make the start against Syracuse righty Austin Voth (7-7, 3.47). Radio coverage on WHJJ (920 AM) and throughout the PawSox radio network begins at 6:35 p.m.
