Indianapolis Indians News Release
INDIANAPOLIS - Jason Rogers collected his sixth home run as the Louisville Bats handed the Indians their sixth consecutive loss, 9-2, on Thursday night.
Driven by Jesse Winker's RBI double to start the evening, the Bats (64-69) jumped to a three-run lead over the Tribe in the first inning. Indians starter Steven Brault (2-7) would only see the mound for two innings, notching three strikeouts.
Following a controversial out called on a stolen base attempt from Austin Meadows in the first, the Tribe (64-69) remained quiet for several innings, with only a pair of hits to show.
The first spark of life from the Indians would come off of the bat of catcher Elias Diaz, pounding an RBI double to send Jose Osuna to score at the end of the fourth inning. Diaz's efforts were echoed several innings later with a solo homer from Jason Rogers in the sixth, but it would be the last run put up by the Indians.
Louisville extended the lead with a big sixth inning. Kyle Waldrop started with a single, which would be followed by five more hits from the visitors' side. The Bats extended their lead to 9-2 by the seventh, never allowing the Tribe within striking distance again.
Outfielder Danny Ortiz made his professional pitching debut in a scoreless ninth, only allowing one walk, giving the Indians one more chance to catch the Bats.
Bats pitcher Robert Stephenson (7-9) picked up the win, while Brault was dealt the loss. Five hurlers appeared for the Tribe on the day.
The short series will conclude Friday night at 7:15 pm. This story was not subject to the approval of the National Association of Professional Baseball Leagues or its clubs.
