Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders News Release
ABOUT LAST NIGHT: The RailRiders rallied from a three-run deficit and routed the Chiefs last night, 10-4.
MAGIC NUMBER: The RailRiders' magic numbers were lowered to four for a playoff berth and seven for the division thanks to Rochester's 3-2 loss at Norfolk in 13 innings and Lehigh Valley's 10-4 setback at Pawtucket. The only teams alive in the wild-card chase all reside in the North with Lehigh Valley (77-54) leading the way followed by Rochester (73-59) and Pawtucket (68-62). Buffalo's 8-3 loss to Gwinnett combined with SWB's win to eliminate the Bisons.
FTW!: The RailRiders' 82 wins make for SWB's highest total since the 2012 vagabond then-SWB Yankees took the IL North with 84 victories. Even with a cancelled contest that lessened the RailRiders' 2016 schedule to 143 games, the team is on pace to win 90 games. No IL club has won 90+ games since the then-SWB Red Barons won a franchise-record 91 affairs in 2002. The RailRiders boast Triple-A's best record and stand tied with Double-A Reading and Low-A Clinton for the most wins in baseball.
ALL IN: Elsewhere on the farm, both Low-A Charleston and Advanced-A Tampa have secured postseason berths in the South Atlantic League and Florida State League respectively. Double-A Trenton has a magic number of five to secure an Eastern League playoff spot and sits just 1.5 games back of first-place Reading for the division crown. The Thunder and R-Phils face each other over their final four regular-season games from Sept. 2-5. The Short Season-A Staten Island Yankees own the top spot in the NY-Penn League's wild-card chase by 1.5 games with a magic number of 12.
CLASSICAL GAS: Mason Williams went 3-for-6 with an RBI and two runs scored as the leadoff man. Since he was activated off the SWB disabled list on Aug. 13, he has slashed .371/.421/.457/.878, going 13-for-35 with five RBIs, three walks and nine runs scored in nine games played.
LORD I WAS BORN A GAMELING MAN: Ben Gamel hit in the clean-up spot for the third time this season. He went 2-for-5 with a double, two RBIs and two runs scored, extending his hitting streak to 14 games. During his latest string of swinging success, he has gone 23-for-59, slashing .390/.413/.525/.938. The IL All-Star ranks among the circuit's best in batting average (5th, .313), hits (T-2nd, 145), steals (5th, 19) and run scored (1st, 75).
R&R: Rob Refsnyder went for 2-for-5 with an RBI. In 12 games played since his return from the bigs, he has gone 20-for-44 (.455) with six RBIs and five walks for a .490 OBP. He has hit safely 30 of his last 32 Triple-A games, slashing .402/.436/.525/.961 with nine doubles, two homers, 11 RBIs and 18 runs scored in that time. The run has shot his average up from .190 to .333.
SOL MAN: Donovan Solano doubled on a 3-for-5 night with a run scored. He has multiple hits in seven of his last nine games. Solano ranks among the IL's best in batting average (6th, .309) and hits (T-2nd, 145). In 22 games played this month, he has slashed .398/.414/.542/.956 with 15 RBIs and nine runs scored.
OFF THE RAILS: SWB's 17 hits fell one short of the season-high mark of 18 set on June 7 versus Charlotte...Relievers Chasen Shreve and Giovanny Gallegos retired all 10 men they faced with seven combined strikeouts... The teams combined for 14 runs on 26 hits with four errors and a collective 12-for-24 showing with men in scoring position...The RailRiders improved to 20-8 (.714) with Kyle Higashioka behind the plate...Clint Frazier posted a pair of hits including a triple, a walk and two runs scored as the six-hole hitter...It marked the first time in his 21 games as a RailRider that he did not hit in the top third of the order.
