Pick Your Player, Choose Your Charity

September 20, 2013 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

Waterloo, Iowa-Since 2006, Waterloo Black Hawks fans have recognized their favorite players and helped good causes through the Slumberland Furniture Fans Choice Player of the Year program; this season, the fans will have the opportunity to steer the proceeds to their favorite local non-profit groups as well.

"Black Hawks supporters have given generously over the last seven seasons. They've identified some deserving, unsung players, and I believe they will help us pick the charities which make some of the most meaningful contributions to the Cedar Valley," said Black Hawks Vice President Mike Falk. "I would like to thank Slumberland Furniture for their partnership and their dedication to making a difference."

As in previous years, one dollar will be worth one vote toward determining the Slumberland Furniture Fan's Choice Player of the Year. Voters will also be encouraged to cast a ballot at the same time for a local non-profit, and those will be tabulated in early January, at which time the winning organizations will be announced.

Last season, the Slumberland Furniture Fans Choice Player of the Year fund included over $1,600 by the end of the season. The money was donated to the Lincoln Elementary Adopt-a-Family program, Alternatives Pregnancy Center, and the Cedar Bend Humane Society. Defenseman Dane Cooper was selected for the award with 508 votes.

The Slumberland Furniture Fan's Choice Player of the Year donation box will once again be located across from the Express Employment Professionals Fan Service Table across from Section D at Young Arena. Voting will commence with the first home game of the regular season against the Dubuque Fighting Saints on September 27th, with the winning player to be announced during the Hawks' Awards Banquet in the spring of 2014.
