Fargo Tops Sioux City 3-2 in Season Opener

Fargo, North Dakota - The Musketeers lost their regular season opener by a score of 3-2 to the Fargo Force at Scheels arena in Fargo, North Dakota tonight..

Fargo got on the board first at the midway point of the opening stanza when Christian Cakebread (Tanner Jago) scored the first of two power play goals at the 8:31 mark. Sioux City's Brandon Hawkins (Dylan Plitt) evened the score at 1-1 with a power play goal after Cakebread was whistled for slashing.

The Musketeers took a 2-1 lead early in the second period when Jared Thomas (Brandon Hawkins, Jake Montgomery) scored his first goal of the season at the one minute mark. Stuart Pomeroy engaged Fargo's Michael Babcock after Babcock ran Sioux City's goaltender, Kyle Hayton, behind his own net at 7:36 of the second period. Cakebread (Teemu Kivihalme, Phil Beaulieu) tied the game for Fargo with his second power play goal of the night at 16:04.

Fargo's Mason Morelli (Kivihalme, Beaulieu) scored the game winner 53 seconds into the third period. The Musketeers could not convert on three separate power play opportunities in the third period. Starting Goaltender Kyle Hayton was pulled for an extra attacker with 50 seconds left to play, but the Force held on for the win.

Sioux City outshot the Force 34-21 in the contest, including a 14-5 shot advantage in the third period with the Musketeers pressing to tie the game. Trevor Olson was out of the lineup tonight for undisclosed reasons. Musketeers affiliate Sam McCormick was suited and wore the number 12 jersey.

The Musketeers return to action on the road again next weekend when they travel to Dubuque on Saturday, September 28th for the Fighting Saints home opener. The Saints are the defending Clark Cup and Anderson Cup Champions from last season.
