Philadelphia Union News Release
CHESTER, Pa. - Philadelphia Union announced today that the club has signed midfielder and captain Alejandro Bedoya to a contract extension. Taking effect immediately, the deal ensures that Bedoya is under contract with Philadelphia through the 2021 season with an option for 2022.
"Ale has exceeded expectations we set for him as a leader on the pitch, in the locker room, and throughout the community," said Ernst Tanner, Philadelphia Union Sporting Director. "At the Union, passion and drive are qualities that we look for, and nobody represents that better than Alejandro. It was very important for us to ensure the captain that led us to our first playoff win remains at our club to push us forward and set an example for our young core."
Bedoya, 32, joined the Union in August 2016 as a Designated Player after a successful career in Europe and after a three-season run with French-side giants, Nantes. After being named the Union's captain in 2017, he was called up to the United States Men's National Team where he was part of the championship-winning 2017 Concacaf Gold cup squad. Most recently, Bedoya led the Union to their first playoff win at home and a historical season for the club. He registered his MLS career-high in goals with four and added four helpers that contributed to the team's most goals, assists, wins and points in club history.
Bedoya has been a mainstay for the USMNT, recording 66 caps since his debut in 2010 and scored a total of two international goals. In addition to being a part of the U.S.' 2013 Concacaf Gold Cup run, he also played in all four of the U.S.' matches at the 2014 FIFA World Cup.
