Charleston RiverDogs News Release
CHARLESTON, SC - The New York Yankees have announced that right-hander starting pitcher David Phelps, who is tied for the most wins in the South Atlantic League, has been promoted to Class A Advanced Tampa. Taking his place and filling out the extra roster spot will be former RiverDogs right-hander Jario Heredia from Tampa and left-hander Trenton Lare from short-season Staten Island.
Phelps leaves Charleston tied for the league lead in wins with 10 and is second in the SAL with 112.2 innings pitched. In 19 starts for the RiverDogs, the University of Notre Dame standout posted a 10-3 record with a 2.80 ERA (35ER/112.2 IP). The St. Louis, Mo. native allowed 117 hits and 25 walks while striking out 90.
Heredia returns to the Lowcountry after making two starts for the Gulf Coast League Yankees where he did not receive a decision with a 1.80 ERA (1ER/5.0IP). The Santo Domingo, DR native made 21 starts for Charleston in 2008 where he went 6-7 with a 3.25 ERA (37ER/102.1 IP). He was also named SAL Pitcher of the Week on July 7, 2008 having been signed by the Yankees as a non-drafted free agent on July 2, 2006.
Lare comes to Charleston on the heels of earning New York-Penn League Pitcher of the Week honors on July 20 for the Staten Island Yankees. During the week that he won the pitcher of the week honors, the southpaw won two starts and did not yield a run while scattering nine hits, two walks and 13 strikeouts in 14.0 innings. In six starts with Staten Island the Lyndon, Kan. native was 3-2 with a 1.07 ERA (4ER/33.2 IP). He was signed by the Yankees as a free agent on June 17 after spending three seasons with the Frontier League's Kalamazoo Kings.
Following an eight-game road trip through Greensboro, NC and Charleston, W.Va., the RiverDogs return to The Joe on Friday, July 31, for a four-game set against the Lexington Legends.
