Augusta GreenJackets News Release
Kannapolis, NC - Missed opportunities for the Augusta GreenJackets and timely hitting for the Kannapolis Intimidators led to a 5-2 Intimidators victory, snapping Augusta's eight-game winning streak at Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium on Wednesday night.
Eric Surkamp found trouble early and couldn't escape a key jam in the second inning. With two on and two outs, Eduardo Escobar's two-run triple brought three in when Escobar scored on a Juan Perez throwing error to give Kannapolis a three-run lead in the second.
The Kannapolis lead grew on an RBI single in the fifth from Drew Garcia and on Brandon Short's solo home run in the sixth inning. All five Intimidators runs crossed the plate with two outs.
Augusta stranded the bases full in the sixth inning in a night where they left ten men aboard. Finally the GreenJackets dented the scoreboard in the seventh. Charlie Culberson hit a groundout to short and reached on an Escobar throwing error to bring in two runs.
Surkamp (6-5) threw six innings, allowing five runs - four earned - on eight hits with a walk and six strikeouts. Dexter Carter - the league's leader in strikeouts - added nine more to his total in the win. Carter (6-2) fired six scoreless innings on five hits and two walks.
Ari Ronick (6-4, 3.04) will try to get the GreenJackets back to their winning ways in the second game of the road trip on Thursday, where he'll face Stephen Sauer (6-3, 3.02). First pitch from Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium against the Intimidators is 7:05 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on WRDW AM 1630 and online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com.
The GreenJackets return home for a nine-game homestand spread across ten days, starting on July 30th against the Greenville Drive. First pitch comes at 7:05 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on WRDW AM 1630 and online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com.
