CHARLESTON, SC - Charleston's Cory Arbiso tossed eight hitless innings as the RiverDogs squashed the Grasshoppers, 8-2, in South Atlantic League action Wednesday night in front of 5,000 fans at Greensboro's NewBridge Bank Park.

Arbiso (3-6) earned the win for the RiverDogs after he stymied Greensboro's bats hitless for a season-high eight innings while walking two and striking out four.

RiverDogs reliever Chuck Nolte entered the game in the ninth and lost the combined no-hitter bid when Daniel Pertusati reached on a leadoff infield single. Nolte proceeded to allow two earned runs on one hit, one walk and two wild pitches before completing the final frame and preserving the 8-2 RiverDogs triumph.

With the victory, Charleston takes the first game of the series and improve its second half record to 11-15 (50-46 overall) while Greensboro slips to 7-18 in the second half (44-51 overall).

The RiverDogs jumped to a 1-0 lead in the third when Chase Weems reached on an infield single, advanced to second on a wild pitch uncorked by Greensboro starter Graham Johnson, dashed to third on a groundout and scored on Corban Joseph's RBI single to left for the game's first run.

Charleston tacked on two additional runs in the fifth when Abraham Almonte reached on an infield single and then stole second and third. Following walks to Joseph and Melky Mesa to load the bases, Taylor Grote laced a single up the middle that plated Almonte and kept the bases loaded. With the sacks packed, Addison Maruszak lined a single to left that knocked home Joseph and made the score 3-0.

The RiverDogs seized a 4-0 lead in the seventh when Mesa hammered a leadoff solo home run over the left field wall for his 19th home run of the season.

Charleston lengthened its lead to 8-0 in the ninth when the RiverDogs scored four times on five hits while sending nine men to the plate. Charleston scored on a RBI single by Joseph, RBI single by Maruszak and a two-run single by Neall French.

Johnson (5-4) suffered the defeat for the Grasshoppers after he was charged with three earned runs on seven hits and four walks in 4.1 innings.

Everyone in the RiverDogs lineup collected a hit for the first time since June 13 as Charleston hammered 14 base knocks led by the quintet of Almonte, Joseph, Grote, Maruszak and Weems, who each smashed a pair while the Grasshoppers lone hit was amassed by Pertusati.

In Game 2 of the four-game set Charleston turns to right-hander Andrew Brackman (1-10, 6.16 ERA) while Greensboro opposes with righty Johnny Dorn (9-6, 3.32 ERA), with first pitch set for Thursday at 7:05p.m.
