Hickory Crawdads News Release

HICKORY, N.C. - The Hickory Crawdads, South Atlantic League affiliate of the Texas Rangers, have announced the details for their Celebrity Tribute Series at L.P. Frans Stadium, to be held during the home set against the West Virginia Power from Saturday, Aug. 8 through Tuesday, Aug. 11. During the tribute series, the Crawdads will pay homage to recently-deceased stars, Michael Jackson, Ed McMahon, Farrah Fawcett, Walter Cronkite and Billy Mays.

The series will start with the Crawdads tribute to the King of Pop, Michael Jackson, during the opener against the Power on Saturday, Aug. 8. Anyone with the first or last name of Michael, Jackson, Billie or Jean will receive a free ticket to the game! Once fans are inside the gates, the first 1,000 will not only receive a Crawdads Umbrella as part of the separate Umbrella Giveaway, but also a white glove giveaway in honor of Jackson. The fun won't stop there, with Jackson's legacy carrying down to the on-field promotions in between innings, including the Catawba Valley Shoe Store Moonwalk to Win contest, the George's On The Lake Thriller Dance-Off, Paramount Kia Neverland Obstacle Course, MJ Lookalike Contest, Jackson 5 Musical Chairs and more!

The tribute series will continue on the afternoon of Sunday, Aug. 9, which is also Jimmy Buffett Day, as the Crawdads remember the career of Ed McMahon. Anyone with the first name of Ed or last name of McMahon will receive a free ticket to the game! In addition to the soothing tropical tunes of Buffett, the game will feature a Star Search Talent Competition, with the grand-winner being voted by the fans. Whoever wins the talent competition will get to enjoy a future Crawdads game from a suite at L.P. Frans Stadium for free! Also, since Buffett performed multiple times on Johnny Carson and Ed McMahon's show, the winner of the talent competition will get to sing some tunes with the Jimmy Buffett cover band, Key West, scheduled to perform after the game. The game will also feature Ed McMahon Guest Announcers, with a different fan selected out of the stands to serve as the public address announcer every half inning, as well as various bits of side kick trivia in reverence of Johnny Carson's long-time compadre, and more!

Then, on Monday, Aug. 10, the Crawdads will remember two stars at once with tributes to Farrah Fawcett and Walter Cronkite. Again, fans with the first names of Farrah or Walter, or the last names of Fawcett or Cronkite, will receive a free ticket to the game. Competitions will include Best Farrah Hair, the Dress Like an Angel Race, Farrah Trivia and Best Shaving Cream, Toothpaste and Shampoo Portrait of Farrah, remembering the products that she promoted. Also, several pink Crawdads merchandise items will be on sale and the proceeds will be donated to cancer research in honor of Fawcett's battle against cancer.

Monday night's game will also include a Walter Cronkite Broadcast Audition on the dugout in between innings. Three fans will give their best Cronkite impressions, and whoever the crowd likes the most will get to spend a half inning on the Crawdads broadcast on The Big Dawg 92.1 FM and Hickorycrawdads.com. Be sure to keep an ear out for Cronkite tag lines sprinkled in the PA script as well!

The series concludes with a farewell to television pitchman, Billy Mays, on Dollar Day and KRAFT Singles Night during the Tuesday, Aug. 11 game. Anyone sporting a full beard or with the name of Billy or Mays will receive a free ticket to the game! The night will also include various timed specials at concessions stands and the Team Store (for example, "if you order in the next 30 minutes, receive two $1 hot dogs for the price of one!"), Billy Mays Product Trivia, the Best Sales Pitch Competition, Spill Cleaner Challenge and more! Fans competing in the evening's on-field promotions will also have the chance to win some of the various products that Mays promoted throughout his well-known career.
