Pheasants Rally Big to Beat Winnipeg

WINNIPEG, Manitoba. - After watching an early, large lead evaporate, the Sioux Falls Pheasants rallied to beat the Winnipeg Goldeyes 15-9 on Saturday night at Shaw Park.
Sioux Falls' victory was the first of the year in Winnipeg after five previous losses. It snapped a six-game losing streak and evened the three game series at one apiece.
The Pheasants (30-36) plated six runs in the second inning and two more in the third for an 8-1 advantage, but Winnipeg (38-28) scored three in the third and tied the game with four runs in the fourth. They overtook the Pheasants 9-8 with an unearned run in the sixth.
In the top of the seventh, Ridge Carpenter batted with two outs and two on. After falling behind 0-2 in the count, he worked the count full and sent Zach Baldwin's 3-2 pitch to center field, scoring Cesar Nicolas to tie the game. Al Quintana followed with an RBI single to plate Trevor Lawhorn and take the lead for good.
The Pheasants cracked three more base hits in the inning, stringing together five consecutive two-out singles and scoring five men in all.
A passed ball and Al Quintana's RBI double in the eighth capped the Pheasants' production for a six-run cushion.
Alan DeRatt's start for the Pheasants yielded eight Winnipeg runs and lasted 3 2/3 innings, but Barry Fowler (1-0) sparkled in relief and earned his first win of the season. He tossed the final 5 1/3 innings, allowing just one unearned run on three hits.
The Pheasants chased Winnipeg starter Rich Hawkins from the game after just two-plus innings. Kaohi Downing followed with four scoreless relief innings, but the Pheasants tallied seven runs and 11 hits off four more Goldeye relievers.
Craig James (2-1) took the loss.
The Pheasants collected 21 hits total, including four doubles and Cesar Nicolas' leadoff home run in the second, his ninth of the year. The Pheasants twice sent 10 men to bat in an inning for their biggest offensive output of the year.
Every Sioux Falls hitter had at least two hits. Ridge Carpenter went 3-for-4 with two RBI, and Al Quintana was 3-for-5 with three RBI. Cory Morales was 2-for-6 with four RBI.
