Chirinos Dazzles In Debut As Diablos Take Fourth Straight Series

July 28, 2012 - American Association (AA)
El Paso Diablos News Release

EL PASO, TX- Luis Chirinos (1-0) pitched eight brilliant innings in his El Paso debut, holding the visiting Amarillo Sox to one run and four hits as the Diablos won their third straight game by a final score of 6-1.

Chirinos, a 22-year old from Venezuela, allowed his only run in the first inning and at one point retired 13 batters in a row. The young right-hander struck out six and walked just one batter in winning his first decision.

At the plate, El Paso overcame the early 1-0 deficit and eventually pulled away in the middle innings off Amarillo starter Phil Bartleski (0-7). J.J. Muse tied the score with an RBI single in the second, and the Diablos took the lead for good in the third on Jermy Acey's two-run single. Acey would finish with three hits and the two RBI's.

El Paso extended the lead in the fifth. Jonathan Cisneros picked up an RBI on a fielder's choice, and Patrick Arlis made it 5-1 with a triple off the left field wall. J.J. Muse's sacrifice fly the very next at-bat gave the Diablos a 6-1 lead and finished the scoring for the evening.

Chirinos, ultimately, was the star, going to just one three-ball count after the first inning.

The Diablos are 28-36 heading into Sunday's series finale, where they have a chance to sweep the Sox for the first time in 2012. First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 p.m. (MST).
