Sioux Falls Canaries News Release

WICHITA, Kan. - The Wichita Wingnuts' pitching staff showed why they lead the league in strikeouts on Sunday. The Sioux Falls Pheasants fanned 15 times in a 6-5 loss to Wichita and dropped their third consecutive game.

Wichita pulled to one game behind the first-place Pheasants in the second-half division race. The Pheasants are 54-28 overall and 22-12 in the second half.

Wichita chipped away at the 4-1 lead the Pheasants built in the first four innings, finally overtaking Sioux Falls in the bottom of the seventh on a two-run double from Jorge Cortes. Josh Horn added an RBI single in the eighth for a 6-4 lead.

The Pheasants had difficulty closing out innings. All six Wichita runs, along with nine from the previous night, scored with two outs in an inning. Ryan Grant (3-3) took the loss in one inning of relief. Dustin Pease (6-1) earned the victory for Wichita.

The Pheasants scraped in a two-out run in the ninth innings on Trevor Lawhorn's bloop single to right field, but closer Cephas Howard struck out Hunter Jobes to end the game. Howard picked up his third save for tossing the final 1 1/3 innings.

Lawhorn was 1-for2 with two RBI, and Tim Hutting continued his hot hotting with a 3-for-5 performance. Hutting scored a run also and collected an RBI.

Sioux Falls looks to salvage the final game of the three-game series at 7:05 p.m. on Monday, August 16. The Pheasants scheduled starter is Ben Moore, who is just three strikeouts away from breaking the franchise single-season record (109) and five away from breaking the league record (111). The game will be broadcast live on Sioux Falls Sports Radio 1230 AM KWSN and www.kwsn.com.

The Pheasants are members of the American Association, a 10-team independent professional baseball league playing its fifth season this summer. Individual and group ticket information is available by calling (605) 333-0179. Fans can also visit the Pheasants at www.sfpheasants.com.
