El Paso Diablos News Release
El Paso, TX - Adam Deleo had a chance to burn his old team one more time and he didn't miss out on the opportunity as his walk off single gave the Diablos a dramatic come from behind 6-5 win at Cohen Stadium on Sunday night. El Paso built a four run lead in the first inning but did nothing offensively until the ninth inning when they scored two runs to win the game. It gives the Diablos their first series win since July 21 against Grand Prairie.
El Paso got out to a quick start as they scored four runs in the first inning on three hits. Bryon Smith had the big hit in the inning with a two RBI double. Arnoldo Ponce and Jeff Vincent both brought in one in the inning. After the first inning the Diablos bats would go cold and it gave the Pelicans a chance to come back. Pensacola tightened up things up in the third inning scoring three runs and cutting the lead to just one. They then took the lead with two runs in the seventh inning.
El Paso had one last chance and it came in the bottom of the ninth inning against Pelicans' closer Seth Overbey. J.D. Reininger led off the inning by getting hit by a pitch. The next batter was Jeff Vincent who tried to lay down a sacrifice bunt but the throw to first was off and Vincent was safe. On the same play Reininger moved from first to third. The next batter was Jonathan Reynoso who tied the game on a single into right. That set it up for Adam Deleo who singled into left through a drawn in infield to bring home the win for El Paso. Deleo was able to burn his former team again as he ended the series 6-12 with four RBI.
Dustin Birosak made a good start for the Diablos. The southpaw worked one batter into the seventh inning before departing. He allowed four runs on eight hits but earned a no decision. Jared Gothreaux had a very impressive start. After allowing the four runs in the first inning he bounced back to allow just two base runners over his next five innings. He at one point sat down 14 straight Diablos. He allowed five hits but that was all he needed to tie the league record for most hits allowed in a season. He tied former Diablos' pitcher David McWatters.
The Diablos were outhit 10-9 in the game. The wind was blowing in at Cohen Stadium and it caused a lot of possible hits to be turned into outs, and there were only four extra base hits in the game between the two teams. Adam Deleo finished the night 2-4 and also added a double. Bryon Smith went 2-4 with a double and two RBI while Kyle Nichols also turned in a 2-4 performance.
El Paso has an off day of Monday and then heads to Grand Prairie for a three game series starting on Tuesday. El Paso will be sending Shaun Ellis (8-3, 4.98) to the mound. Game time is set for 6:05. Fans can listen in by tuning to ESPN radio 1380 or online at www.diablos.com.
