Wichita Wingnuts News Release
WICHITA, KS- The Wichita Wingnuts defeated the Sioux Falls Pheasants 6-5 at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium on Sunday evening.
The Wingnuts overcame a 4-1 deficit and scored all of their runs with two outs for a second consecutive night.
Down 4-3 in the bottom of the seventh, Josh Horn doubled to deep left-center field against reliever Ryan Grant. Ryan Patterson walked and both Horn and Patterson moved up 90 feet when Grant threw a wild pitch with Cesar Suarez at the plate. After Suarez popped out to first base, Jorge Cortes pulled a double to right-center that scored the tying and go-ahead runs.
The Wingnuts added a key insurance run in the eighth on a two-out, RBI single from Horn. Cephas Howard, who recorded the final out in the top of the inning, issued a leadoff walk to Reggie Abercrombie in the ninth. Abercrombie stole second, but Howard came back with consecutive strikeouts of Beau Torbert and Brandon Sing. Trevor Lawhorn hit a bloop single to right field that cut the Wingnuts' lead to 6-5, but Howard came back and struck out Hunter Jobes to end the ballgame.
Dustin Pease earned the win in relief, in large part due to clutch pitching in the top of the seventh. With the Wingnuts still down 4-3, Pease struck out Jobes and Gus Milner back-to-back to strand runners on second third.
The Wingnuts scored first on a two-out, RBI single by Carlos Rivera in the bottom of the first. The Pheasants went ahead in the third on an RBI single from Abercrombie and a bases loaded walk to Lawhorn.
Sioux Falls extended their lead in the fourth beginning with a leadoff double from Milner. Eddy Rodriguez laid down a sacrifice bunt to third that was thrown by Michael Bell into foul ground, allowing Milner to score. Rodriguez took third on a sacrifice bunt from Joe Anthonsen and scored on Tim Hutting's RBI single to right.
The Wingnuts pulled back within one run in the bottom of the fourth. Cortes led off with a walk and eventually scored on a two-out single by Jorge Delgado. Michael Bell singled to right-center, setting up a two-out, RBI single from Jeff Christy.
Howard earned the save, protecting the lead over the final 1.1 innings. Gabe Medina started for the Wingnuts, allowing four runs, three earned, in 5.1 IP in a no-decision. Medina struck out eight. Wingnuts' pitchers combined for 15 strikeouts. Grant took the loss for the Pheasants. Ryan Rodriguez started for Sioux Falls and took a no-decision, allowing three earned runs in six innings.
The Wingnuts finish their series with Sioux Falls tomorrow night at 7:05 p.m. Sean Teague takes on right-hander Ben Moore. For tickets, call the Wingnuts' office at (316) 264-NUTS.
