Adirondack Phantoms News Release
(SYRACUSE, N.Y., March 5, 2003) - Kent McDonell and Andrej Nedorost each collected two assists to lead the Syracuse Crunch to a 3-1 victory over the Philadelphia Phantoms tonight at the War Memorial at Oncenter.
Pascal Leclaire notched the win by making 29 saves for Syracuse, which was 1-3-0-1 in its previous five games. The Crunch also won at home for just the second time in their last 10 tries and ended a two-game skid vs. the Phantoms.
Peter White scored the lone goal and Antero Niittymaki made 18 saves for Philadelphia, which fell to 1-4-1-1 in its last seven contests and dropped its third straight on the road. The Phantoms still lead the season series 3-2, with the sixth and final match-up scheduled for April 2 in Philadelphia.
Crunch right wing Matt Davidson netted the only goal of the first period on a shorthanded breakaway with 8:18 to go. With teammate Paul Traynor in the box serving a hooking minor, Davidson took a feed from Pauli Levokari at center ice and beat Niittymaki for his 15th goal of the season. McDonell also received an assist on the play.
Traynor gave the Crunch a 2-0 lead 4:31 into the second stanza, as Nedorost set up his third goal of the year. Nedorost also assisted on Syracuse's next goal with 1:41 left - a 2-on-1 break that widened the gap to 3-0.
McDonell took a pass from Nedorost on the play and darted down the far side before crossing it to Derrick Walser, who one-timed a shot on goal. Niittymaki got a piece, but not enough as the puck trickled in for Walser's third of the season.
Philadelphia finally got on the board 5:14 into the third period during a 5-on-3 situation. Andre Savage began the sequence with a pass to Mark Greig at the far side of the net. Greig immediately offered a cross-crease feed to White, who scored his 23rd goal of the year and 17th as a Phantom.
The Phantoms are back in action on Friday at 7:05 p.m. when they host the Worcester IceCats at the First Union Spectrum. They then entertain the Lowell Lock Monsters on Saturday at 7:05 p.m. before traveling to take on the Norfolk Admirals on Sunday at 4:00 p.m.
